ABOUT US:
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. Gas is an essential part of a secure energy supply in Britain, and will continue to play a vital role for decades to come. More than ever, we need the security that gas brings to keep the lights on, businesses running, and to protect jobs. National Gas provides that security.
National Gas is responsible for transporting gas to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, more than 500,000 businesses, and 23 million homes through nearly 5,000 miles of pipes across Britain.
National Gas is also proud to lead the way in transforming the energy network for a net zero future. Gas provides the energy security to support renewable electricity generation, and we are developing our infrastructure to transport hydrogen and carbon dioxide across the country.
At National Gas, we are disability confident and we are signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, committed to building a workforce that represents the communities we serve. We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation, and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

We’re looking for a technician with mechanical engineering experience to join our field operations team, supporting the safe and efficient running of the UK and Ireland’s gas transmission network. This is a hands-on role where your mechanical expertise will be key to delivering a range of specialist services - such as under pressure drilling, flow stopping, valve repair, recompression and in-line inspection - on high-pressure pipelines, above-ground installations and compressor stations.
You’ll be responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of mechanical systems and equipment, often in challenging environments. You’ll work within Safe Systems of Work, carry out risk assessments and ensure all tools, vehicles and equipment are maintained, tested and calibrated to meet legislative standards.
We’re looking for someone with practical experience in mechanical operations - ideally in areas like pressure systems, pipe fitting, or damage assessment - who can confidently interpret technical requirements and work collaboratively with engineers to plan and execute jobs. You’ll also be expected to use digital systems to record working time, materials and job progress and contribute to depot-based activities such as developing new techniques and supporting safety inspections.
Your primary location will be Ambergate, therefore you must live within 20–40 miles (around 30–60 minutes) of the Ambergate site and be able to work on-site five days a week.
Once fully trained, you’ll also be part of a standby rota - usually once every couple of months, though this could be more frequent at times to cover things like annual leave.
Sometimes, you may be called out to work at a different location. This could mean staying away from home for the week and jobs can be anywhere in the UK or Ireland.
If you’re a multi-skilled problem solver who thrives in the field and takes pride in doing things safely and right the first time, we’d love to hear from you.
