The Mechanical Technician Intern supports the Mechanical, Water Reclamation (WATR), and Waste Maintenance & Operations teams in maintaining and operating facility mechanical systems. Under the guidance of senior technicians, you will learn core maintenance practices, assist in troubleshooting, and develop hands-on skills working with pumps, compressors, HVAC systems, chillers, heat exchangers, piping, valves, and process utilities. This is an excellent entry-level role for candidates with strong mechanical aptitude who are eager to learn and grow within a high-tech industrial environment. Responsibilities: Support senior technicians with maintenance and operation of facility mechanical systems including HVAC, pumps, compressors, chillers, heat exchangers, and utility systems. Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance (PM/CM) following established job plans and safety procedures. Participate in daily equipment rounds and visual inspections, noting vibration, leaks, temperatures, noise, and signs of wear. Learn and practice proper alignment, torqueing, mechanical assembly/disassembly, and equipment installation techniques. Support lubrication activities, oil sampling, filter changes, seal inspections, and preventive maintenance documentation. Assist with pump, valve, and piping work including leak checks, gasket replacement, and mechanical seal inspections. Participate in equipment startup/shutdown procedures and learn system interdependencies and safe operating limits. Support monitoring of chilled water, compressed air, and cooling water systems, recording pressures, temperatures, and flow rates. Learn structured mechanical troubleshooting methods under senior technician guidance. Participate in equipment rebuilds and overhauls, gaining exposure to teardown and reassembly techniques. Learn to interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and system schematics. Document all work, readings, and notes in the CMMS (e.g., Maximo). Support spare parts inventory, tool management, and proper material storage. Participate in safety programs including toolbox talks, JHAs, and training sessions (LOTO, confined space, chemical safety). Maintain clean, organized work areas and uphold housekeeping standards. Learn system balancing, flow control, and pressure management fundamentals. Assist with system performance checks, equipment testing, and data collection for engineering or reliability teams. Observe senior technicians during RCA or taskforce activities to understand structured investigation processes. Contribute to updates of maintenance job plans, checklists, and documentation. Demonstrate initiative by asking questions, engaging with mentors, and showing curiosity about system functionality. Follow all EHS requirements, reporting unsafe conditions, leaks, or equipment issues immediately. Participate in intern/technical training modules and field demonstrations. Skills Required: Strong mechanical aptitude demonstrated through hobbies, coursework, or hands-on experience (e.g., auto mechanics, robotics, 3D printing, small engines, HVAC basics, etc.). Ability to walk up/down stairs and cover up to 5 miles per day during rounds. Ability to push, pull, and maneuver up to 50 lbs for extended periods with breaks. Ability to climb ladders up to 25 feet and qualify for fall-protection training. Ability to obtain forklift certification (prior certification not required). Willingness to work in an industrial environment and follow strict safety protocols. Experience with tools, mechanical repair, maintenance, or hands-on technical work. Familiarity with CMMS software (e.g., Maximo) is a plus. Education / Licenses / Certifications High school diploma or equivalent required.
