The Opportunity Our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility is looking for a Mechanical Technician/Machinist to join our Product Innovation and Technology team at our Mechanical Testing Laboratory in Port Kembla. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers. In this hands-on role, you’ll be responsible for operating and maintaining a range of CNC and manual lathes, ensuring critical machining equipment is available, safe, and performing to standard. Where equipment requires specialist repairs, overhauls, or OEM-supplied parts, you will also play a key role in coordinating third-party repairs and vendor support, working closely with contracts and suppliers to ensure timely and quality outcomes. This is an ideal opportunity for a trade-qualified Machinist or Mechanical Technician who enjoys a mix of hands-on machining, fault-finding, and technical coordination within a heavy industrial environment. What Will You Do? You will apply your technical expertise to ensure that all mechanical equipment is maintained, as well as completing other assigned tasks to support the daily operations of the Mechanical Testing Laboratory department. You will: operate and maintain CNC machines and manual lathes plus saws and hydraulic punches perform routine inspections, servicing, fault finding, and corrective maintenance on machining equipment diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair pathways provide detailed diagnostics to OEMs, contractors, and specialist vendors when in-house repair is not feasible provide key information to generate supply, stock and purchase requisitions; and control the servicing schedules of equipment through work orders, including identification of key spare parts for breakdown repairs More About You You will have a machining background with a keen interest in developing into the full requirements of the role, including learning how to support and coordinate external repairs when required.
