ABOUT US

The Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) Undergraduate Student Services (UGSS) unit, provides a wide-ranging suite of services to support the operations and administration of all undergraduate programs in FIMS in the areas of undergraduate curriculum, student engagement, student recruitment, as well as any initiatives focused on outreach, engagement and retention of future students, current students, and alumni. The unit is responsible for providing high quality academic advising and career services, programs and supports to enrich the quality of the undergraduate student experience in the Faculty. We strive for excellence in delivering the best student experience through a student-centric, supportive, caring, accessible and knowledgeable student services environment, helping students design, modify and achieve their academic and career goals, from admission through to graduation.

EDUCATION:

Must be a current undergraduate student registered in a Major or Honours Specialization in Media, Information, and Technoculture (MIT) or Media and the Public Interest (MPI) at Western University

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have completed MIT 1020E / MediaCom 1020E and MIT 1025F/G / MediaCom 1025F/G
  • Minimum 80% cumulative average and at least 80% in MIT 1020E / MediaCom 1020E
  • Demonstrated interest in learning strategies and peer support
  • Excellent communication (listening, speaking, presentation) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and a positive attitude
  • Commitment to supporting fellow Western students
  • A three-term commitment is preferred due to the intensive training and ongoing development involved

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous leadership or volunteer experience in community or campus settings
  • Familiarity with campus resources and services
Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Media & Communication Studies (MACS) Student Learning Coaches (SLCs) will work collaboratively with one another, the Learning Development and Success team, and FIMS Undergraduate Student Services to design and lead interactive group study sessions that support the development of students’ academic skills. These sessions are not intended to review lecture content but instead focus on helping students build strategies for university success such as time management, active reading, test preparation, and critical thinking. As a MACS SLC, you will co-facilitate one 60-minute session per week for students enrolled in MediaCom 1020E, helping foster peer connection, engagement, and confidence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend mandatory training and ongoing professional development meetings
  • Stay current on relevant course demands and students’ academic challenges
  • Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and instructors to develop and adapt weekly session plans based on student needs
  • Co-facilitate one 60-minute study session per week focused on learning skills and academic success strategies
  • Foster and maintain an inclusive, welcoming, and safe learning environment
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisors and team members; respond to inquiries in a timely manner
  • Raise any questions, concerns, or challenges with the supervisor
  • Provide students with activities and strategies for academic success, including reducing procrastination, preparing for exams, and improving study habits
  • Help create handouts and promotional materials to support session activities
  • Engage in specialized training on learning theories and peer-facilitated group work
