Overview Trains to become a Medical Assistant Apprentice. Learns to perform clinical tasks of a medical assistant while preparing for the national certification exam. The MA Trainee is a temporary role for those actively enrolled in the DHCI program. Upon successful completion trainees transition to apprentices. Responsible for learning and practicing clinical duties such as taking vital signs, giving injections, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site. Responsibilities Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Learns to greet, check in patients, and notify appropriate provider. Learns to prepare patient, room and equipment for procedures and exams. Learns to take and record vital signs, informing provider of patient vital signs and concerns. Learns to recognize and treat emergency patients as a priority, assist with patient examinations and treatments. Learns to handle patient situations over the phone, schedule appointments and procedures with medical professionals. Learns to understand limitations in dealing with patients over the phone, and involves nursing staff and providers. Learns to register new patients and establishes a medical record. Learns to prepare patient billings. Learns to assist patients by filling out insurance and other forms. Learns to instruct patients in preparation for specific procedures. Learns to collect and processes routine laboratory specimen. Learns to operate and maintain clinical equipment. Learns to maintain and use aseptic technique including sterilization, disinfection and disposal of contaminated material. Learns to clean, wraps and autoclaves instruments. Cares for supplies and equipment. Prepares for national certification exam. Performs other duties as required or assigned. Qualifications Demonstrated strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work well as a member of a team. Computer skills strongly preferred. Must be willing to complete all class activities and assignments as scheduled which may include evenings and weekends. Required Licensure/Certifications BLS certification required within 30 days of hire date. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA-NHA) within 6 months of hire.
