JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Consultant will serve as the designated physician advisor to Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) on matters related to student health care, emergency health protocols, and employee medical accommodation requests. The consultant will provide standing orders, crisis support, and ongoing medical consultation to college health and HR staff, in compliance with state and local public health regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of post-residency clinical experience, with at least 2 years in a consultative or administrative medical role
  • Experience working with educational institutions, public agencies, or related environments
  • Knowledge of ADA, HIPAA, and emergency public health protocols
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Availability to respond to inquiries and attend scheduled meetings as required by contract

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience serving as a school or college medical consultant
  • Experience with pandemic or infectious disease response
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in educational settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with nurses, HR professionals, and administrators
Responsibilities
  • Meet once per semester at each campus with Student Health Services staff to review policies, protocols, and medical best practices.
  • Provide as-needed medical consultation by phone or electronic communication to registered nurses at any of the three SCCC campuses.
  • Review, approve, and sign standing orders for medication dispensation and emergency response protocols.
  • Be available by phone or in person to provide expert guidance during public health crises (e.g., COVID-19, influenza, Ebola).
  • Collaborate with the Office of Human Resources to provide medical assessments related to reasonable accommodation requests and other employee health-related issues.
  • Ensure that all consultation and documentation is compliant with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable New York State medical regulations.
  • Maintain clear records of recommendations and approvals, supporting the College’s internal documentation and audit readiness.
