Explore Career Pathways for Laboratory Professionals: Responsibilities Functions as a professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for the performance of clinical laboratory testing that pertains to patient care and diagnosis. Performs routine and special laboratory procedures, quality control, preventative maintenance, minor equipment repairs, inventory control, and statistical compilation. Participates in quality assurance, performance improvement, laboratory education, new employee training, and proficiency testing when assigned. Displays technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures. Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines. Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to the appropriate care provider. Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. Exhibits problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results. Participates in the training/mentoring of new employees, students, or interns, including lectures and bench techniques. Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity. Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, and performs proper, prompt specimen transport. Qualifications Job Requirements: Baccalaureate Degree or Associate's Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician, or a chemical, physical or biological science degree. Preferred Job Requirements: ASCP or equivalent. Certification within a specific area, i.e., M(ASCP), H(ASCP), C(ASCP) qualifies. Previous clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist within a clinical laboratory.
Responsibilities
The Medical Lab Scientist performs routine and special clinical laboratory testing to ensure accurate patient diagnosis and care. They are also responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring regulatory compliance, and mentoring new staff or students.
