Staff Position Description Position Title: Medical Laboratory Technician Position Code: TechMedLab-6120 Department: Laboratory Services Safety Sensitive: YES Reports to: Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor Exempt Status: NO Position Purpose: All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision of providing the region’s best clinical care and patient service through an environment that fosters respect for others and pride in performance. Performs patient and proficiency testing with related quality control, calibrations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment and testing. Key Responsibilities [List of material responsibilities and essentials duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position] · Test procedures are correctly executed and performed without errors according to established policy and procedure. Correlates data (Clerical &/or technical) & monitors test results for reasonableness and detects discrepancies. Judges the adequacy of submitted specimens from hard to draw patients (pediatric thru geriatric) and reorders specimen if necessary. · Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. · Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies. Document all quality control activities, instrument/procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. · Follow the established policies and procedures for remedial action whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance and document accordingly. · Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Either correct the problems or immediately notify the on-site technical Leadership. · Maintains and completes all required preventive maintenance in accordance with established protocols and within established deadlines. Performs, records, and reviews QC functions within specified time frames before reporting test results. Takes appropriate action in out-of-control situations or when test results are discrepant or unexpected before reporting patient results. · Completes routines and STATs within expected time frame. Regularly demonstrates the ability to coordinate a simultaneous series of tests maintaining accuracy along with the flexibility in adjusting schedules in response to STAT orders and fluctuations in patient workload. Takes responsibility for completing all procedures scheduled during the shift without sacrificing the quality of work performed. · Other duties as assigned. Qualifications [Statements regarding minimum educational and experience qualifications, required proficiencies with specialized knowledge, computer proficiencies, military service, required certifications, etc.] Education: Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or other related clinical science field from an accredited institution or equivalent acceptable education as defined by CLIA Licensure: MLT (ASCP), AMT, AAB or NCA (formerly HEW) required within 1 year of hire Preferences [Preferred attributes for the position which are not absolutely required in the minimum qualifications (i.e., multi-lingual, master’s degree)] Experience: Minimum of 1 year previous hospital laboratory experience Special Position Requirements [Optional section: any travel, security, risk, hazard or related special conditions which apply to the position] Exposure Categories: Category I: Expected duties have routine potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues Work Requirements [Optional section: work requirements for physical or other important issues which relate to the job] · Frequent walking of about 2-3 miles per day. · Occasional lifting of 40-50 pounds or less. · Occasional bending, stooping or reaching. · Sitting for prolonged periods (40-50% of the time). · Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors.
