Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE:

A vacancy has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant in our Haematology/ Blood Transfusion Department at our Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals. Candidate will be expected to manage daily routine laboratory duties and the ideal candidate will contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department and to work independently performing routine analyses with support as required from Biomedical Scientists/ Senior Biomedical Scientists.

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

Main duties will include rotation between Haematology and Blood Transfusion across both sites covering the 24/7 service, candidates will be expected to participate in all the duties, including night shifts on the Medical Laboratory Assistant Out of Hours Rota.
The responsibilities of this role include the analysis of patient samples to aid diagnosis of disease process by the application of Haematology/ Blood Transfusion technological and manual methods. Main duties include, general housekeeping including stock and waste management, to assist in the maintenance of equipment including start-up and shut-down procedures, running controls and calibration, as well as, ensuring equipment is functioning correctly prior to analysis, to help with troubleshooting procedures and informing SBMS when further actions are required. Medical Laboratory Assistant will perform various routine laboratory and specimen processing tasks in a precise and accurate manner to assist the laboratory staff in providing an excellent laboratory service and to maintain high standards of quality within the department and enter test results onto the LIMS prior to authorization by a qualified BMS. Medical Laboratory Assistant working in Blood Transfusion will be expected to book in Group and Save sample on the LIMS system and ensuring patient demographics are accurately matched, load and unload samples onto analysers either for automatic or manual sampling as required, ordering Blood components and help maintain cold chain in the Blood Transfusion Laboratory.
