Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Sciences Laboratory Technologist ( MLS Technologist) supports student learning and skill development within the Medical Laboratory Assistant ( MLA ) and Medical Laboratory Technologist ( MLT ) programs by assisting students in achieving established learning outcomes identified in program course outlines. The MLS Technologist assists and guides student performance in laboratory and simulation settings through the delivery of laboratory activities, demonstrations, equipment preparation, and technical support. Responsibilities include ordering, organizing, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, supplies, specimens, and learning resources, as well as maintaining accurate inventory records.


As part of this role, the MLS Technologist is responsible for supporting laboratory quality, safety, biosafety, and biosecurity practices in accordance with Public Health Agency of Canada ( PHAC ) requirements, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System ( WHMIS ) standards, applicable provincial legislation, and accreditation requirements established by Accreditation Canada EQual and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science ( CSMLS ). This includes maintaining laboratory equipment, quality control records, safety documentation, standard operating procedures, and other resources necessary to support a safe and effective learning environment.


Working under the direction of the Academic Manager and faculty members assigned to the labs, the MLS Technologist provides students with opportunities to develop and refine technical competencies in specimen collection, specimen processing, laboratory operations, quality assurance, and diagnostic testing procedures. The incumbent collaborates with management, faculty, support staff, vendors, and contractors to support laboratory operations, maintenance, and safety.
