JOB SUMMARY

Performs chemical, bacteriological, immunological, and coagulation tests, examines specimens, and collects blood from patients as overseen by the Department Laboratory Director. Performs routine and complex clinical laboratory procedures. Recognizes unusual results and variances while performing these procedures and makes necessary simple corrections and adjustments. Orients others to the proper performance of routine procedures. Assesses quality, efficiency, and safety in the performance of technical work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Works in an environment interacting with physicians, patients, technologists, and other hospital teammates. Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner. May be required to stoop, reach and lift light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must have an associate degree or equivalent education and training as defined by CLIA. MLT registry eligible or equivalent required. MLT (ASCP/AMT) or equivalent required within one year of hire. MLT (ASCP/AMT) certification through the U.S military medical laboratory training programs by an accredited institution is acceptable. Blood bank experience preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Completes assigned workload within established turnaround times. Assesses the urgency of a test and uses this assessment to select the order in which the tasks are performed.
  • Prepares specimens for testing. Verifies patient identification on samples and requests before testing.
  • Applies rules of specimen rejection and arranges for recollection.
  • Performs the various tests without undue delay or excessive supervision.
  • Uses and maintains the various pieces of equipment and instruments used in test performance.
  • Prepares reagents as required for test performance, calculates test results.
  • Reports test results and keeps accurate and proper records of test results.
  • Assesses the test results, and phones and documents all critical values to the nursing unit or physician.
