Description 1TT03 PVH employment application required. All job offers contingent upon background check and completion of pre-employment physical. Full-time, 36 hours, night shift. Hourly rate, Non-exempt, union. Perform blood collection procedures using a variety of techniques. Interact with patients. Process orders through information system and label specimens. Provide technical training to students. Perform equipment maintenance. Perform quality control and waived / nonwaived patient testing with a variety of automated and nonautomated methods on all shifts, sometimes without direct supervision. Process reported results through information system and maintain regulatory documentation. JOB FUNCTIONS Judge test order appropriateness. Accurately transcribe provider test orders. Process standing and verbal orders. Obtain Advance Beneficiary Notice if required. Positively identify patient. Collect blood specimens in appropriate tubes using technique appropriate to age and physical state of patient. Annual in-service on handling patient emergencies. Instruct / direct collection of urine specimens using technique appropriate to test ordered. Determine acceptability of specimens and rejects per policy. Give collection requirements to patients and providers. Process specimens. Process referral specimens up to point of shipment. Stock supplies within and maintain a neat and orderly work area. Maintain inventory. Maintain analyzers. Perform instrument calibration and quality control. Recognize an unexpected or out-of-control QC value and troubleshoot system before reporting patient results. Notify supervisor of discrepant results, non-functioning equipment, and unresolved QC problems. Perform laboratory testing in all areas. Recognize an unexpected and/or abnormal result, correlating with patient age and sex, and troubleshoot system. Recognize interfering substances that can affect results. Alert provider of panic values per policy. Process outgoing laboratory reports. Distribute reports. File laboratory reports. Operate CPSI system within scope of responsibility. Instruct and observe students in performing testing. Orient new employees through responsible areas. Review new policies and procedures. Seeks to upgrade or broaden skills, maintains Lab and BLS Certifications. Use personal protective equipment during collection and testing, including gloves. Appropriately use BD safety needles and Point-Lok device. Appropriately use aerosol shields and safety caps. Immediately dispose capped needle and holder. Appropriately use Sharps containers and red bag waste. Observe, report, and eliminate safety hazards within work area. Follow safety and exposure control procedures. Quality Improvement: Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence. Emergency Management: As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so. Requirements National medical / clinical laboratory technician certification required, such as ASCP, AMT, or equivalent. BLS required.
