Description Shift: Nights: 6:00 pm - 6:00 am Job Summary: Under the general supervision of a Lab Supervisor, the MLT performs all laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: Proficient and competent at venipuncture and arterial puncture. Demonstrates the ability to prioritize and respond appropriately to routine tests, timed tests, ER tests, and STAT tests to maintain controlled workflow and quality patient care. Has written and oral communicative abilities adequate to comprehend technical materials and communicate with medical professionals. Practices clinical lab science in the following specialties; i.e. responsible for examination of materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease or the assessment of a medical condition. This includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of such examinations: Chemistry & Special Chemistry Hematology Urinalysis Coagulation Blood bank Performs appropriate instrument checks, and maintenance as required. Properly operates any lab instrument and able to perform any required procedure. Must be able to use independent judgement and knowledge to perform related tasks. Must possess sufficient academic, technical, clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, troubleshoot, research, and resolve day-to-day problems that arise or special projects assigned by supervisor or Chief Administrative Officer. Maintains all records necessary in all departments. Able to perform well in all areas of lab during Health Information System downtime scenarios. At all times, takes care not to compromise patient care with excessive rejections, recollections, or delays. Utilizes judgment in including appropriate disclaimer statements in the report indicating the potential compromised nature of the result and reason. Practices and supports safety in the workplace. Consults with appropriate personnel and reports to/documents when test findings are abnormal and when difficulties are encountered in testing. Correlates test results with diagnosis, and questions incompatible results. Demonstrates ability to perform testing according to the established policies and procedures. Performs duties in an independent manner and helps others with little or no direct supervision. Requirements Professional Requirements Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual education requirements Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly. Attends mandatory meetings; attends and/or reads minutes of other scheduled meetings. Supports the Mission and goals of JCMH/HMH and department for quality patient care. Respects patient confidentiality and uses discretion in discussion of patient information. Recognizes when others are in need of assistance and consistently offers to help when own workload permits or finds someone who can. Assists Managers/Supervisors with scheduling/workload needs. Demonstrates courteous behavior and telephone etiquette through polite and respectful communication with all patients, guests, and co-workers. Follows hospital and departmental requirements for infection control and safety. Demonstrates evidence of maintaining professional knowledge and skills (competency). Demonstrates initiative in all areas. Regulatory and Education Requirements: Associate in Science degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent training) required. MLT Registry eligible with ASCP or equivalent preferred. Experience: One year of experience preferred. Skills: Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level (2 years).
