Overview
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist – Genetics to support the Genetics Department in day-to-day laboratory operations. Reporting to the Clinical Scientist – Genetics, the role involves routine testing, equipment operation, quality control, and documentation for genetic and genomic analysis using advanced sequencing platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Operations: Perform genetic testing procedures using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and PCR methodologies as per standard operating procedures.
- Equipment Handling: Operate and maintain NGS equipment, including Thermo Fisher Ion Torrent and Oxford Nanopore platforms.
- Sample Management: Receive, label, and process biological samples in compliance with biosafety protocols and traceability requirements.
- Data Handling: Perform primary data generation and quality checks; support data transfer for bioinformatics analysis.
- Documentation: Accurately record all testing activities, calibration logs, maintenance reports, and quality control data.
- Quality Control: Execute internal quality control checks and participate in proficiency testing and other QA programs.
- Support Validation: Assist in method validation and verification under the guidance of the Clinical Scientist.
- Compliance: Follow all laboratory safety, infection control, and data confidentiality protocols in accordance with DHA and ISO 15189 standards.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Clinical Scientist, QA personnel, and other departments to ensure timely and accurate test delivery.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Master’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, or Genetics Licensure: DHA Professional License as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in the field of Molecular/Genetics.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years’ hands-on experience in a clinical genetics laboratory.
- Demonstrated experience operating Thermo Fisher Ion Torrent and/or Oxford Nanopore equipment.
- Familiarity with PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, and NGS workflows.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of molecular biology techniques and laboratory best practices
- High attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
- Good communication and time management skills
