Job Description: The Medical Laboratory Technologist - Microbiology is responsible for the efficient operation, analysis, and reporting of tests performed in the lab. Plate reading using standard methods for microbial isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing. The role will perform all required maintenance, QC, and equipment calibration as necessary to operate the lab. Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Performs all microbiology duties in accordance with established procedures and policies. Plates, isolates, and identifies bacterial and other microorganisms present in body fluids and rectal swabs on appropriate media. Processes isolates on automated identification and sensitivity equipment, as necessary. Verifies, records, and reports result in LIS in a timely manner. Has in-depth conceptual and practical knowledge of microbiology and basic knowledge of related disciplines. May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Perform equipment and instrument maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and established protocols. Follow recommended manufacturers and/or department-defined instrument performance checks and calibrations prior to testing. Perform, evaluate, and report QC protocol; identify and resolve QC failures; document resolutions. Troubleshoot and resolve basic instrument malfunctions following the aid of instrument manuals or technical service by telephone. Assist Pathology Lab Manager in resolving problems. Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas to ensure adequate availability; receive and stock supplies. Perform competency and proficiency challenges in a timely manner. Responsible for efficient and cost-effective use of supplies and reagents. Assists Director in meeting department regulatory agency requirements (CAP, CLIA, etc.). Maintains accurate logs and records. Organizes and labels specimens/paperwork and keeps records of tests. Disposes of laboratory waste and change solutions appropriately. Performs other laboratory and office duties as assigned by manager. Qualifications: BS in Medical Technology preferred; or one of the following: BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or Associate degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493. 1433, published on March 14, 1990. Minimum of one (1) year relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician with Clinical Laboratory experience in a Microbiology Lab required. Requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent, Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), and will be verified prior to employment. Able to work some weekends and holidays, as this is a requirement for this role. Knowledge, Competencies & Skills: Current knowledge of acceptable and appropriate clinical practice, quality assurance, and patient management and care. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective healthcare team member, as this role will receive minimal guidance. Excellent customer service skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Job Type: Full-Time Pay Range: $35.00 - $41.00 per hour Actual compensation offered to candidates is based on work experience, education, skill level, and geographic location. Compensation may vary depending on the state or region in which the position is located, in accordance with applicable laws. This position has no close date.
