JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for a permanent evening, permanent night, or permanent weekend shift and performs technical work involved in transfusion medicine procedures and specimen procurement in the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory of the Hematopathology Program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Two (2) years of recent, related experience as a Registered Technologist (RT) in Transfusion Medicine procedures or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).

Responsibilities

1.Performs analytical procedures according to established protocols that may include crossmatch, serological testing and blood product component manipulation. Performs procedures by operating a variety of laboratory equipment, apparatus and instrumentation.
2.Responds to requests and inquiries for transfusion services and testing. Seeks direction as required from the Section Supervisor, Assistant Head Technologist, Head Technologist or Hematopathologist on call as appropriate.
3.Maintains and documents maintenance of laboratory equipment. Recognizes and reports malfunctions in equipment. Documents and reports day to day work problems to Section Supervisor. Monitors test and quality control results, and notifies senior personnel of abnormalities; participates in monitoring of existing guidelines where appropriate to ensure quality is maintained.
4.Performs a variety of Quality Assurance procedures; responds to customer service expectations and queries, and refers questions to senior personnel where appropriate; performs routine maintenance on equipment following established schedules; notifies the Section Supervisor, or designate, in the event of major problems; participates in laboratory safety in the assigned area.
5.Provides input in the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the analytical section including making recommendations for changes.
6.Demonstrates routine laboratory procedures to students and technologists.
7.Participates in monitoring of laboratory supplies.
8.Performs other related duties as assigned.
