Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) currently has an opportunity for an executive leadership role as its Medical Officer of Health (MOH) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Thunder Bay District Health Unit is a public health agency incorporated under Ontario’s Health Promotion and Protection Act and governed by the Board of Health for the District of Thunder Bay. It is one of twenty-nine (29) not-for-profit, publicly funded health agencies in Ontario.
Thunder Bay District Health Unit provides public health programs and services to approximately 153,000 people across a large geographic area of 235,000+ square kilometres. This includes 15 municipalities, 25 First Nations, and unorganized communities and areas across Thunder Bay District. Its main office is located in the city of Thunder Bay with branch offices in Geraldton, Marathon, Red Rock, Manitouwadge and Terrace Bay.
The Health Unit works with individuals, families, coalitions and partner agencies to deliver public health programs and services geared toward people of all ages in a variety of settings including community spaces, health care settings, workplaces, daycare and educational settings, and homes.
The MOH/CEO reports to an autonomous Board of Health that has a rich history of public health service in Ontario. This position is an integral member of the local health community, working closely with engaged and supportive local governments, First Nations and Indigenous organizations and communities, hospitals, health agencies, police, schools, and the social service sector delivering provincial public health standards, addressing local issues – protecting and promoting population health.
The Board is looking for an outstanding leader with a passion for creating healthy communities and a commitment to improving health and reducing health inequities through evidence-informed practices.
As MOH/CEO you will understand the Ontario Public Health legislative framework and have the ability to maneuver within the political context of public health. The MOH/CEO will understand rural and Indigenous health issues, respect Indigenous cultures and traditional knowledge, and be committed to culturally safer practice. Reporting directly to the Board of Health and working closely with committed management and dedicated staff, you will foster a diverse and respectful work environment and reflect the values of excellence, commitment, inclusion, and transparency.
The successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and hold a fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or a certificate, diploma, or degree from a university in Canada that is granted after not less than one academic year of full-time post graduate studies or its equivalent in public health. The successful applicant will also have a proven track record of leading transformational change, working collaboratively with other health disciplines and community-based service providers, and additional experience in financial management, labour relations, strategic planning, and program development.
