Their main duties include getting biological samples ready to test, conducting blood tests and creating reports of their findings.   Responsibilities   * The technologist must be aware of the job duties of the MLTs, lab assistants and phlebotomists, be able to perform all those tasks in their absence and be able to give direction when necessary to either.   * The technologist should be able to supervise the running of the laboratory in the unexpected absence of the supervisor.   * Must be willing to assist in the training of new personnel, students, and personnel from other departments requiring tutelage in laboratory procedures.  * Must be willing to assist in the evaluation of new equipment and procedures and be able to write policies and procedures relating to either.   • Must be able to interpret QC data, inform the supervisor of problems and initiate troubleshooting to correct those problems.  This includes proper utilization of technical support hotlines.  Must be able to maintain QC logs in LIS and complete any monthly statistics for submission to QC providing organizations for peer review.  * Must be able to operate Laboratory Information System, including accessioning, ordering tests, reporting of sample results, and some basic troubleshooting of the information system.   * The technologist must be able to perform all analytical testing within the laboratory, from logging, ordering tests, reporting of results, perform maintenance on equipment and keep all records in each department as required.  * Initiate troubleshooting in all areas of the lab if necessary.  * Review all sample results processed in assigned department.  * The technologist must be able to perform linearity and calibration verification testing. * Must be familiar with all normal, abnormal, alert, and critical reference ranges for procedures.  The technologist must be familiar with policies involving special handling of results when required.  Complete result processing, printing and distribution knowledge is required.  * Be able to recognize erroneous results either due to specimen adequacy or analyzer malfunction.  * Review delta flags in LIS to determine reliability of result.   * Personal protective equipment is to be used, appropriate to the task being performed.  All safety practices found in the laboratory safety manual are to be followed without fail. * The technologist is responsible for helping maintain adequate inventory of all supplies.   * The technologist will be required to show proficiency in all testing areas assigned by participating in laboratory wide Proficiency Programs and internal blind sampling. * Technologists and technicians will cover call.  The technologist must rotate call with lab staff, attend promptly when called, expedite testing, dress appropriately when called in and appear professional at all times Requirements   * Must have graduated from an approved School of Medical Technology/Laboratory Science and be certified/registered by one of the following agencies: MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT), CLT(NCA) * High school diploma or equivalent required * Associate degree or higher preferred * Medical laboratory experience preferred
