Under the general supervision of Laboratory Technical Specialist and/or Laboratory Director, performs a wide variety of complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures according to established standards; maintains equipment and monitors quality control and instrument/test performance. Confirms and verifies results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, instrumentation and quality control review. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Service/Productivity/Professional Performs clinical procedures by established protocols in order to provide accurate diagnosis data. Samples are accurately identified and labeled. Results are evaluated and questionable results are repeated and/or investigated. May rotate to various lab sections and performs clinical duties in a competent manner according to established procedures. Routinely completes assigned work on time. Completes STAT requests within defined turnaround times. Critical values and issues are called to the appropriate healthcare provider. Provides quality Customer Service in a timely and courteous manner. Check inventory and rotates supplies; restocks supplies as necessary. Recognizes limitations/resourcefulness of their competency within the realm of the job description. Effectively interacts with Laboratory personnel from all departments to resolve routine issues. Demonstrates appropriate use of the LIS system to complete assigned tasks. Maintains a safe work environment in the laboratory by meeting all regulatory standards and following Universal Precaution. Presents to the department prepared to work in a timely fashion according to scheduled hours. Performs additional tasks/assignments/projects to benefit the organization. Keeps an orderly work area. Once initially deemed competent and remains competent via competency assessment, supervision and/or supervisory review is not required for specimen processing, test performance or results reporting. Assures quality control Prepares standard solutions and reagents and maintains Laboratory equipment in good working order. Complies with all safety and related rules/regulations and adheres to all proficiency testing requirements per CMS. Completes all appropriate CEUs. Performs related duties Performs additional related duties as assigned. Troubleshoots technical problems involving chemicals and equipment. Point of care duties Manages POC testing which includes establishing, revising, and monitoring policies and procedures for TVC POC testing program. Verifies that POC testing meets all regulatory requirements for standards. Designs and organizes a well-documented and thorough program to provide assistance to all POC testing user sites which includes instrument trouble shooting. Develops procedures for detecting unapproved POC testing and maintaining compliance. Works with the lab manager and laboratory medical director to respond to requests for new POC testing equipment. Coordinates education and required training which includes competency for non-laboratory staff who perform POC testing. Validates and correlates studies on all POC testing devices using established protocols. Orders, distributes, tracks and reviews proficiency testing materials. Reviews QC and maintenance records for testing sites.X Educates non-laboratory staff and informs personnel of any manufacturer procedural changes. Monitors Quality Assurance activities in all POC departments; develops a culture that recognizes quality assurance as an integral component of daily operations. Compiles all data into a monthly report to be reviewed by the lab medical director; evaluates the effectiveness of quality assurance program annually and provides a written summary of findings. Prepares for and participates in all applicable accrediting agencies inspections. Qualifications Educational / Minimum requirements: BS in Medical Technology (MT) or Bachelor’s in Chemical, Physical or Biological Sciences; experience in a clinical laboratory preferred. State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: ASCP Certification strongly preferred. Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital. Physical Requirements: Walking, standing, sitting, bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs., perform moderately difficult manipulative skills, arm-hand steadiness, and hand-eye coordination skills; walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Work Environment: Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body tissues and/or fluids, chemical fumes and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer. Cognitive Requirements: Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time, able to communicate verbally, using advanced level vocabulary.
