MAINTAIN SAFE ENVIRONMENT BY ENSURING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Timely washing of hands with disinfectants.
  • Decontaminate benchtops and equipment.
  • Use of personal Protective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean room environment by disinfecting benches/equipment daily with disinfectant.
  • Dispose hazardous medical waste according to waste management policy.
  • Adhere to standard lab precautions.
  • Complying with the ISO Requirements.
  • Complying with the organisation’s policies, procedures and rules.
  • Comply with GCLP, as well as relevant statutory/regulatory requirements
  • Attending the relevant in-service training, workshops and meetings.
  • Establishing a full knowledge of the quality manual.
  • Assisting with the training and competence of relevant staff.
  • Perform internal audits on all sites, as and when, needed or required.
  • Record the temperature of the room and fridges and take corrective actions when required.
  • Report all malfunctions to the laboratory manager.
  • To participate and assist in laboratory projects.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant experience
  • National Diploma in Medical Technology, Biomedical Technology, Bachelor of Health Sciences: Medical Laboratory Science
  • HPCSA registration (clinical pathology/Histopathological technique)
  • Perform sampling and analysis of human and environmental samples
  • Preparation of samples for examination
  • Knowledge for the usage of specialised instrumentation
  • Accurate interpretation of results
  • Establish and monitor programmes that ensure data accuracy
  • Accuracy and organisational skills
  • Attention to detail and strive for an error-free standard

Responsibilities

The histotechnologist works as a professional that takes responsibility for histological tasks:

  • Pre-analytical specimen preparation and processing, embedding, microtomy, mounting, staining, tissue cutting, frozen sections, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Develop, update, and implement related histotechnology procedures, including quality control.
  • Operate lab equipment/instruments: cryostats, microtomes, tissue processors, slide stainers, embedding centers, distillation systems, special stain units, IHC instruments
  • Perform histological procedures to aid in diagnosis, research, and instruction.
  • Prepare tissue samples with knowledge of different techniques.
  • Maintain and operate lab equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, instruction manuals,
  • Perform quality assurance, quality control, calibration, and equipment maintenance.
  • Initiate and participate in quality, safety, and compliance programs.
  • Demonstrate minor and major problem-solving and troubleshooting ability.
  • Oversee lab operations and facilities.
  • Oversee the maintenance and organisation of lab equipment, reagents, and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of stock management.
  • Knowledge of histology administration and maintaining records of all work.
