Must have graduated or successfully completed a certificate program for Medical Assistants and must have at least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant required, or two years as a Medical Assistant in related position preferred. Must have current CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. Applicant must be able to work a variable schedule, including travel within between our RSBCIHI clinic locations. This position includes the responsibilities of the Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) Grant Assistant as well as those of a clinical Medical Assistant (20% grant coordinator/80% clinical Medical Assistant). As part of the healthcare team, the incumbent plays a crucial role in managing relevant data associated with the Breakthrough T1D non-profit corporation grant, which involves screening patients for T1D. This includes receiving and collating test results, preparing reports, and maintaining effective communication with all parties involved in the grant. In addition, this staff member will perform as a clinical medical assistant performing clinical direct patient care and back-office duties, within the medical assistant scope of practice, for ambulatory patients, and in emergency situations. The incumbent adheres to all applicable RSBCIHI corporate policies and protocols. Must be able to deliver competent, age-specific care to patients in an ambulatory, primary care setting, including performance of treatment/ procedures, performance of waive testing procedures. Must be able to work with the Indian Community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Professional communication and collaboration with patients, medical, nursing, lab, and diabetes department staff via email, phone, NextGen electronic health record, and fax. Coordinate and research requested medical documentation via Electronic Health Records Develop and maintain effective tracking mechanisms for T1D Grant related data. Deliver competent, age-specific care to patients in an ambulatory, primary care setting, including performance of treatments/procedures, performance of waived testing procedures, and participation in patient education activities. Exhibit a professional manner by communicating effectively with fellow employees, medical providers, and patients/families, while maintaining confidentiality regarding personnel issues. Contribute to efficient and effective patient flow during daily operation by: Maintaining current knowledge of front-desk procedure to expedite scheduling of patients and completion of appropriate paperwork. Participating, within the scope of Medical Assistant practice, in visit planning activities to improve health maintenance compliance and customer satisfaction. Preparing patient and equipment/supplies for various procedures. Demonstrate expertise in patient screening activities and skillful use of medical equipment, including: Accurate, timely documentation of screening test results. Prompt notification to appropriate licensed staff, which may include Registered Nurse, and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse, and/or medical provider in the instance of abnormal results of screening procedures. Performance of appropriate equipment maintenance and prompt reporting of equipment malfunction. Use patient related computer applications appropriately. Under supervision by a physician and/or nurse practitioner, and within the Medical Assistant scope of practice, performs and documents minor treatment and procedures (i.e. ear irrigations, foot care, procedures involving personal hygiene). Participants in effective and efficient use of resources by monitoring supply and material inventories and following proper procedures to reorder and restock as directed by the Charge Nurse and/Director of Nursing & Outreach Services. Assist in maintaining accurate tracking logs and systems for patient care health maintenance issues. Attend required meetings and training sessions and participate in organizational performance improvement activities. Refer to the Ambulatory Care Nursing Manual, Program Administration Manual, and other established guidelines and protocols as necessary to comply with this organization’s standards of performance. Participate in clinic related health events in the communities served by the corporation. Other duties as assigned by the Site Manager or Director of Nursing/Outreach, relevant to the position, with relevant training and competency assessment documented. This position may require working evenings and on weekends. This position requires floating to various clinics within the RSBCIHI system to provide staff coverage, as assigned by the Director of Nursing, or assigned designee. Qualifications Education: High School graduate or equivalent Completion of an accredited medical assistant certificate program is required, applicants must provide documentation of diploma or certificate. Experience: One year as a Medical Assistant in related position, Required. Two years as a Medical Assistant in related position, Preferred. Certification: Must have current CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. Knowledge of: Basic knowledge of endocrinology and diabetes preferred. Experience and knowledge of basic office software including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Skill: Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of personnel within and outside the organization including the medical team and administrative staff. Ability to: Work a variable schedule (times and locations) to meet client and program needs. Must be able to work with the Indian Community, and exhibit sensitivity to the Indian culture and its needs. Physical Demands: Extended periods of time typing, reading, making/receiving phone calls, and working on computer equipment. There is frequent exposure to infectious diseases. Frequent walking, bending, and reaching. Standing and/or sitting for long periods of time. Some lifting required. The incumbent will be required to assist patients who are frail or handicapped. Driving is required between clinics. Appointment Type: Full-Time, 40 Hours, Non-Exempt, benefit-eligible position.
