Description JOB SUMMARY: Prepares, administers and documents all routine prescribed medications. Gives PRN medication only when authorized by the licensed nurse. Under general supervision of licensed personnel, monitors and responds to patient needs as a Certified Nursing Assistant. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Prepares, administers and documents medications. Administers and documents regularly prescribed medication as permitted only after personally preparing the medications to be given. As authorized by licensed nurse or provider, may administer PRN medications. Observes and reports to the charge nurse any reactions and side-effects of medications commonly administered to the residents. Takes and records vital signs prior to administration of medication which could affect or change the vital sign. Documents all medications given according to established policy and procedure. Applies specifically ophthalmic, otic and nasal medications, according to Medication Aide regulations. Keeps the medication room clean. Under direction of licensed personnel, administers direct bedside nursing care as a C.N.A. Assists with resident/patient feeding at meal times. Performs personal care according to resident needs. Assists residents in the activities of daily living in accordance with the plan of care and the established policies and procedures of the unit. Provides service direct to residents while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere. Documents resident care according to established policy and procedure. Assists in maintaining logs, charge tickets and reports. Assists in carrying out physician orders and requests for restorative care. Helps to evaluate residents and determine the most desirable type of treatment. Assists with the performance of selected rehabilitative and therapeutic activities and exercises. Provides respect due to each resident, family member and co-workers. Avoids unnecessary exposure during care. Speaks politely to and considers preferences of resident. Includes residents in decision making. Introduces self and reason for being there. Refrains from engaging in casual conversations with co-workers in open areas in view of residents and visitors. Assists in maintaining a clean, safe environment for residents, finding and correcting situations that have a high probability of causing accidents or injuries to residents. Recognizes legal implications if physician’s orders are not carried out correctly. Recognizes when a situation cannot be handled and requests help from proper personnel when necessary. Maintains Supplies and equipment. Cleans equipment and returns to storage area as appropriate. Requirements Education – High school Graduate or equivalent Job Related skills – Ability to read and write with effective oral and written communication License, Registry or Certification – Certification as Medication Aide in Texas Certification as Nursing Assistant in Texas BCLS certification Experience – Prior Work Experience - One year experience in a medical setting preferred Technical Training – Computer skills required. Physical and Mental Requirements - Position requires extended periods of walking and standing. Some bending, stooping and reaching is required with lifting to 50 pounds. Transferring and lifting or supporting patients who may experience sudden weakness or inability to stand. The ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instructions and directions and to instruct employees. OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potential infectious materials. Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. Follows MCHD Policies and Procedures and safety guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned by the department management staff. Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
