Direct Your Life (DYL) is a Black-led, non-profit organization based in the Greater Toronto Area. Founded and run by individuals with lived experience navigating the criminal justice system, DYL empowers justice-involved individuals—particularly Black youth—through peer mentoring, reintegration support, and community-based programs.
We are the only support organization of its kind in the GTHA offering culturally relevant, lived-experience-led services to those impacted by incarceration and street-level violence.

DESCRIPTION

Direct Your Life is seeking passionate and strategic individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a Board Member, you will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s vision, governance, and sustainability. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute your expertise to a grassroots organization committed to social justice, equity, and second chances.

BOARD MEMBER REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience or expertise in at least one of the following areas: non-profit or charitable law (preferably with board governance experience); accounting, finance, or fiscal oversight; fundraising and donor relations; criminal justice reform, community reintegration, or lived experience in affected communities
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of institutional and systemic barriers of the criminal justice system
  • Minimum 1-year commitment
  • Availability to attend monthly evening meetings and participate in board duties
  • Strong strategic thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Prior board or committee experience (preferred but not required)
  • Lived experience or deep understanding of systemic issues within the criminal justice system is considered a strong asset
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
Responsibilities
  • Champion and uphold the mission, vision, and values of Direct Your Life.
  • Provide strategic oversight and contribute to the development of organizational goals and policies.
  • Monitor financial performance and ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Attend and actively participate in monthly Board meetings (virtual).
  • Prepare in advance by reviewing agendas, reports, and relevant materials.
  • Serve on committees or working groups as needed.
  • Support fundraising and resource development efforts through your network and expertise.
  • Promote the organization in the community and act as an ambassador for DYL.
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
