About the Green Gas Certification Scheme
The Green Gas Certification Scheme (GGCS) runs a platform for the issuing, transfer, and
retirement of Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs). RGGOs are electronic certificates
that are issued to green gas producers. They represent green gas producers have injected into
the grid and can then be transferred between a variety of counterparties, such as gas suppliers
and commodity traders, before being allocated to gas consumers. Gas consumers can then claim to
have used green gases such as biomethane, rather than fossil gas.
The GGCS ensures that only one RGGO is issued for each unit of biomethane injected, that those
units are transferred securely, and only ever allocated to one consumer. By doing so we provide
certainty that green gases are not double counted.
Within our membership we have over 100 biomethane production sites and over 100 companies which
trade RGGOs. RGGOs are used by well-known energy suppliers such as British Gas and Good Energy
to provide evidence of having supplied their customers with green gas, as well as by a range of
companies large and small, such as Nando’s and Liverpool FC.
