The “Eshkiniigjik Naandwechigegamig - A Place for Healing Our Youth” – “Aabiish Gaa Binjibaaying – Where Did We Come From?” is an Indigenous Youth Agency dedicated to providing programming and services to support Indigenous youth in North America. Our mission is to help them become responsible, participating citizens while leading their Indigenous communities.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Thunder Bay, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor will provide comprehensive counselling services to youth, focusing on mental health diagnoses, substance use, and addiction challenges. This role involves conducting needs and risk assessments, crisis management, and trauma-informed care. The counsellor will also coordinate educational workshops and maintain strict confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related human services field, preferred.
  • Must be able to register with either CRPO, OCSWSSW, or College of Psychologists Ontario.
  • Experience in supportive interventions to assist youth to develop to their fullest potential.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the Indigenous community (Inuit, Metis or First Nation).
  • Fluent in an Indigenous language and knowledge of Indigenous cultures is an asset.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Adequate energy and ability to meet the physical, and mental demands of the job.
  • A valid Standard First Aid and CPR.
  • A valid Driver’s license is a definite asset.
  • A positive, fun-loving attitude.
  • The ability to work as a team and be self-motivated.
  • Cleared Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSC) is mandatory.
  • Positive attitude, self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
Responsibilities
  • Provide counselling at ENAGB drop in locations.
  • Provide mental health counselling regarding the cause, symptoms and prevention strategies of various mental health diagnoses.
  • Provide counselling regarding the use and effects of alcohol and drugs.
  • Prepare needs and risk assessments for clients.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction challenges.
  • Accept and make referrals to outside agencies when needed.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all youth, conversations and referrals.
  • Utilize the ENAGB management record system to document all client encounters in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and facilitate educational workshops on mental health and addiction related topics.
  • Ensure confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Ensuring a team approach.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the ENAGB Youth Program.
  • Other related duties as it relates to this position.
