The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is a federally and state mandated resident-directed advocacy program designed to protect the civil and resident rights of vulnerable adults living in long-term care facilities.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists primarily to protect the civil and resident rights of New Mexicans living in long-term care facilities and to independently advocate for residents’ wishes and quality of care that meets national standards.
How does it get done?
Regional coordinators develop relationships within the long-term care facilities and within their region to promote and protect resident rights and the role of the Ombudsman program. They are knowledgeable about long-term care services and supports. They manage regional Ombudsman Volunteers: recruit, train, retain and provide support and technical assistance. Identifies, investigates, and resolves complaints made by or on behalf of long-term care facility residents that relate to action, inaction or decisions that may adversely affect the health, safety welfare or rights of residents. Travels throughout the Albuquerque Metro region to visit residents in facilities, participate in resident care plan meetings, visit resident and family councils, and promote the program. Maintains a regular presence in long-term care facilities and provides in-service trainings to staff, resident and family councils. Keeps volunteers current through oversight and training. Provides direct advocacy services in all facilities not covered by a certified volunteer. Maintains case documentation in Ombudsmanager to support the federal Ombudsman Program National reporting requirements as a basis for continued federal fiscal support. Provides systemic advocacy and education services in long-term care facilities to ensure quality of life of facility residents. Maintain case documentation as required for national reporting and for court appearances as needed.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or related social science field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification, plus two (2) years of related experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment state and federal criminal background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within 90 days of employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in person with residents where they reside and in an office setting with extensive computer and telephone use. Statewide travel is required to visit residents in long-term care facilities, as well as travel to trainings and outreach events.
