Description
Description IHRC Inc. provides scientific, information management, and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other agencies under US Health and Human Services (HHS). The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). The work location is at CDC, 1600 Clifton Rd, Atlanta, GA. The Microbiologist II will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks associated with quality management, quality assurance, and general laboratory practices that encompass both molecular and traditional techniques. • Perform tasks associated with maintaining the operations of the laboratory, while strictly adhering to QMS, CLIA and ISO regulations • Perform QA/QC tasks and experiments including reagent and instrument qualification and test system validation • Provide basic analysis of data for the tests performed • Perform equipment maintenance including eyewash checks, freezer defrosts, incubator maintenance, routine equipment maintenance and instrument troubleshooting, etc. • General cleaning, tidying of laboratory procedural rooms, including recycling, emptying waste bins, re-stocking • Ensure all procedures and documentation meet Quality Management Standards • Specimen management • Supply and reagent ordering and receiving • Reagent and chemical inventory management including identification and disposal of expired items • Perform traditional and molecular laboratory testing. This may entail applications during outbreak responses. • Assist more senior laboratorians as needed with non-CLIA testing activities • Perform testing in support of research and surveillance activities • Assist in preparation of datasheets, documents, standard operation procedures and worksheets as necessary • Database curation includes adding, removing, cleaning and editing data • Participate in internal and external meetings Requirements Education: • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences to include Biology, Microbiology, or closely related field Required: • Practical knowledge of Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) or Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) procedures. • Ability to understand and adhere to strict laboratory safety standards, quality management and laboratory practices. • Ability to follow highly detailed SOPs to perform assigned tasks • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and DNA analysis software • Ability to work independently while maintaining the flexibility to respond to the needs of the program • Ability to work as part of a team • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States. Desirable: • Proficiency with common microbiology laboratory practices, including real-time PCR, nucleic acid extraction, isolation and culturing techniques, complex data analysis and interpretation Language Skills: • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
