Description

This is a full-time hourly position working 40+ hours per week. Position salary starts at $37,440.00- $41,600.00 per year ($18-$20 per hour) with an annual wage increase based on performance. The laboratory’s core hours of operations to the public are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, and analytical staff hours may be adjusted to meet department workload needs. There is also rotating weekend hours.
This position provides support for both microbiology and general chemistry analytical activities. This position works with the general public and other laboratory staff. The analyst must have a positive and professional attitude with well-developed customer service, statistical, analytical, computer, and multitasking skills.
Other duties may be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s of Science (BS) degree with a major in natural sciences such as Microbiology, Biology, or Biochemistry, or an Associate’s Degree plus two (2) years’ experience as a laboratory technician, or an Associate’s Degree (with courses in natural science) and two (2) years of experience as a laboratory technician performing general microbiological analysis in a production environment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Lead Analyst: This position reports to the lead analyst in the Microbiology (and Chemistry unit, as needed), and by such, oversees the activities of other staff as laboratory technicians and lab helpers working in the microbiology unit.
Other: This position has limited interaction with clients in person and by phone answering questions related to test results and parameter methods.

Responsibilities

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of analytical results from the specific analysis that are assigned by the Lead Microbiology Analyst and/or Laboratory Manager.
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining adequate stocks of reagents for the tests assigned.
  • Responsible for QC of every microbiological supply lot, autoclave runs, incubators, water baths, and refrigerators in the microbiology unit, as well as the RO water.
  • Responsible for keeping accurate and complete records as detailed in the laboratory policy and procedures manual.
  • Responsible for client record archiving and laboratory data archiving.
  • Responsible for maintaining all instrumentation and equipment assigned to them.

DUTIES AND TASKS:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare reagents, standards, and QC samples to support sample analysis;
  • Use appropriate SM and/or EPA methods to analyze water, soil, or other sample matrices for microbiological constituents as assigned;
  • Use UV-light system to analyze samples for colony forming units and presence/absence detection of bacterial colonies;
  • Use IDEXX reagents and kits to analyze samples for bacterial analytes;
  • Use routine laboratory equipment such as: pH meter, Conductivity meter, and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer;
  • Use Dissolved Oxygen (DO) meter, combination meter, for BOD, CBOD, Temperature, and DO analysis;
  • Use conductivity meter to determine salinity;
  • Use computer programs to calculate and report analytical data;
  • Accurately report data from analysis in a timely fashion;
  • Take inventory of supplies routinely used and make requests for supplies in sufficient time to prevent uninterrupted routine analysis;
  • Handling and maintaining an inventory of all Hazardous Waste generated;
  • Autoclave contaminated samples and analytical waste, as needed, prior to disposal;
  • Writing and updating laboratory SOP’s as assigned;
  • Perform general housekeeping duties of assigned bench-top areas (e.g., clean bench-tops, wipe up spills, dusting computer equipment and other equipment);
  • Decontaminate and sanitize microbiology unit, consisting of bench-top areas, floors, incubators, water baths, refrigerators, and sink;
  • Perform Color analysis on drinking water and environmental samples;
  • Perform Turbidity analysis on drinking water and environmental samples;
  • Perform Proficiency Testing (PT) assessments on various analytes for microbiological and general chemistry analysis.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
