Microbiology Laboratory Assistant - Evening Shifts


We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our microbiology laboratory team in Bowen Hills. This position plays an important role in supporting laboratory operations by ensuring specimens are accurately processed and prepared for testing. Working in a fast-paced diagnostic environment, you will assist scientific staff by maintaining efficient workflows, handling specimens with care, and ensuring the laboratory environment meets high standards of safety and organisation. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in structured environments, values accuracy, and enjoys working as part of a professional healthcare team.


Key Responsibilities


- Preparation and handling of microbiology samples

- Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment

- General laboratory housekeeping and administrative tasks

- Support for culture setup and plate preparation

- Stock control and reagent preparation

- Data entry and sample tracking using the Laboratory Information System (LIS)


What we are looking for


- Exceptional attention to detail

- Ability to work efficiently under time pressure

- Robust organisational skills

- Reliable attendance and punctuality

- Comfortable working in a specimen-heavy environment

- Strong team focus and professional communication

- Availability Monday–Friday, 6:00pm–1:30am (minimum commitment of two shifts per week if part-time)

- Willingness to participate in two public holiday shifts per year

- Availability to join an occasional weekend roster once appropriately trained


To be successful in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:


- Completion of Year 12 or equivalent

- Experience in pathology or microbiology specimen processing

- Understanding of biosafety principles required in diagnostic microbiology
