Position Title: Laboratory Technician Group: ALS Food NZ Location: Hamilton, New Zealand Generic Position Title / Code: Laboratory Technician Line Manager: Team Leader Direct Reports: N/A Organisational Relationships: Laboratory staff, Client Services staff, Technologists, Technical Manager, Quality and H&S staff, HR, IT, Business Manager Position Duties and Scope: The Laboratory Technician is responsible for: Ensuring that analytical procedures and associated tasks which he/she is responsible for are conducted in accordance with the ALS Quality Work Instructions including QA/QC; Follow ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation principles at all times; Organising designated tasks to maximise daily efficiencies; Ensuring that all tasks and analyses are performed within both the time set down by the supervisor and the relevant analysis standard; Highlighting anomalies in results and sample type and sample behaviour to the Section Supervisor; Performing housekeeping duties as required; Calibrating equipment as required by the Section Team Leader and/or the QC Coordinator; Performing calculations as required when conducting analytical preparations; Under the supervision of senior technical staff, assist with the development and validation of new moths, or modification of existing methods; Prepare reagents and standards; Become proficient in relevant laboratory method, reaching a position of being to train and (if required) technically supervise the work of other laboratory technicians; Identify improvements in any aspects of ALS’s work that can be considered for implementation to make the company more efficient or effective; Controlling consumable stock required for the tasks performed; Other duties, as requested, relating to this position. Quality Responsibilities: The Laboratory Technician has the following Quality responsibilities: Familiar with and adherence to ALS Quality System. Participate in audits as required. Complete proficiency activities as required. Notify Laboratory Manager or Team Leaders when deviations noted in testing compared to the ALS Quality System. Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) Responsibilities: The Laboratory Technician has the following Safety responsibilities: To have an understanding of the company’s major HSE policies. To have an understanding of the company’s safety & environmental requirements as set out in the safety manual. To ensure that the business is compliant with ALS requirements for Health, Safety and the Environment. To provide the necessary equipment and environment to ensure safety in the laboratory. To report and rectify any compliance concern, unsafe practice or environmental harm. To develop and further improve the safety & sustainability culture within the business unit through strong leadership. Position Requirements: One year’s relevant experience (a degree or diploma preferred) and, an appropriate level of aptitude depending on the tests to be allocated.
