Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Position: Microsoft Power BI Engineer

Department: Information Technology

Reporting To: Software Development Lead

Job Purpose

This role is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the business intelligence layer that turns data from our trading, brokerage, asset management, and corporate finance operations into clear, reliable, and actionable insights for decision-makers across the firm.

The role will own semantic data models, author DAX and Power Query transformations, craft executive-ready dashboards, and administer the Power BI Service end-to-end. A core accountability is to translate business questions into well-governed, performant, and secure analytics, ensuring every report is accurate, trustworthy, and aligned with the firm's data governance and regulatory expectations.

Supervisory Scope

Direct Reporting

  • None (Individual Contributor Role)

Indirect Reporting

  • External BI/Data Vendors and Consultants (as required).

Key Responsibilities

BI Solution Design & Data Modelling

  • Design and maintain robust semantic data models (star schema, relationships, hierarchies) optimised for Power BI.
  • Author efficient DAX measures and calculation groups to support complex business and financial logic.
  • Build reusable Power Query (M) transformations for clean, consistent, and refreshable datasets.
  • Translate reporting requirements into scalable, well-structured analytical models with a single source of truth.

Report & Dashboard Development

  • Develop clear, interactive, and visually consistent dashboards for executive and operational audiences.
  • Apply strong data-visualisation principles to surface insight, not just data.
  • Build parameterised, drill-through, and paginated reports to serve varied reporting needs.
  • Iterate on designs with stakeholders to ensure usability, clarity, and business relevance.

Business Partnership & Requirements

  • Partner with business heads, finance, and operations teams to understand reporting and analytical needs.
  • Elicit, clarify, and document requirements, KPIs, and precise metric definitions.
  • Challenge ambiguous or conflicting metrics to ensure a single, trusted set of numbers.
  • Communicate insights, limitations, and data caveats clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Data Preparation & Integration

  • Connect to and integrate data from SQL Server, APIs, files, and internal business systems.
  • Build and schedule dataflows and dataset refresh with reliable, monitored pipelines.
  • Ensure data quality, validation, and reconciliation across sources before publishing.
  • Collaborate with engineering to shape upstream data structures for reporting efficiency.

Performance, Quality & Standards

  • Optimise data models, DAX, and queries for fast, responsive report performance.
  • Apply consistent design, naming, and modelling standards across all reports.
  • Test and validate report accuracy against source systems before every release.
  • Reduce dataset size and refresh cost through efficient model and query design.

Governance, Security & Access Control

  • Implement row-level security (RLS) and role-based access aligned with business needs.
  • Manage workspaces, apps, and content lifecycle within the Power BI Service.
  • Enforce data governance, sensitivity labelling, and controlled sharing of reports in line with regulatory expectations.

Deployment & Operations

  • Administer the Power BI Service, gateways, capacities, and scheduled refreshes.
  • Manage deployment of content across development, test, and production workspaces.
  • Monitor refresh failures, performance, and usage, and resolve issues promptly.
  • Partner with InfoSec, Compliance, and Risk functions to align the BI platform with corporate and regulatory requirements.

Documentation & Stakeholder Reporting

  • Maintain data dictionaries, metric definitions, model documentation, and runbooks.
  • Document report logic, data lineage, and design decisions for long-term maintainability.
  • Report on report adoption, usage, and data-quality metrics to leadership.
  • Support user enablement and drive self-service BI adoption across the business.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Microsoft certifications (PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst, or Fabric/Azure Data certifications) are a strong advantage.
  • Financial services or regulated-industry exposure is preferred.

Experience

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience building Power BI solutions, with deep expertise in DAX and Power Query.
  • Strong data-modelling background and advanced SQL for data extraction and transformation.
  • Proven track record of delivering executive-level dashboards and self-service analytics.
  • Experience administering the Power BI Service, gateways, dataset refreshes, and row-level security.
  • Prior experience in regulated, financial services, or otherwise data-sensitive environments is strongly preferred.

Competencies / Skills

Functional

  • Advanced Power BI: DAX, Power Query (M), semantic modelling, and report design.
  • Strong SQL Server and T-SQL, with query performance tuning for analytical workloads.
  • Solid data-modelling skills: star schema, dimensional modelling, and relationships.
  • Power BI Service administration: workspaces, apps, gateways, capacities, and RLS.
  • Data visualisation and dashboard design best practices.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, and dataflows.
  • Exposure to Excel, Power Automate, and the wider Microsoft data stack.
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native design on Azure or AWS.

Desired Candidate Profile

Behavioral / Leadership

  • Integrity and sound judgment with data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Curiosity and a problem-solving, analytical mindset.
  • Strong stakeholder management across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ownership, accountability, and bias for delivery.
  • Clear, structured communication (written and verbal).
  • Collaborative, team-first mindset.
