The school’s athletics department aims to create a positive environment that reflects transformational coaching. The position requires excellent teamwork with colleagues and incorporates best practices into a growth-oriented teaching style in a K-12 school environment. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience supporting basketball coaching at the middle school level. They should align with our school’s values and mission to foster the best in educational practices and strive for excellence while meeting each student’s athletic potential. Our basketball program has a wide range of abilities, from beginners to year-round players. We are looking for an assistant coach who can help meet all our students' needs to grow a love of the game and advance their skill level and understanding of basketball. Our season runs from late November through the middle of February. The middle school teams practice Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. on our main Edgehill Campus. There are generally two games each week, mostly on weekdays beginning at 4:00 p.m. Responsibilities: Support the head coach in planning and leading practices that develop fundamental and advanced basketball skills Provide individualized instruction and feedback to help student-athletes improve technique, game awareness, and overall performance Motivate and inspire student-athletes, fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive team culture Assist with game-day preparation, including strategy discussions, warm-ups, and in-game adjustments Promote the physical, emotional, and social development of each student-athlete, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth Monitor the health and safety of student-athletes during practices and games, including injury prevention and proper warm-up and cool-down routines Support administrative and logistical tasks, such as managing equipment and assisting with game logistics Uphold and model high standards of conduct, adhering to department and institutional policies as well as league regulations Attend all department meetings and actively contribute to positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and the broader school community Serve as a role model for student-athletes by demonstrating respect, integrity, and commitment to team values Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach or athletic coordinator Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent recommended Experience and Competencies: Previous playing experience required, college preferred Previous coaching experience recommended Skills and Abilities: Professional who is dependable and organized, with integrity, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude Strong computer skills Strong oral and written communication skills Attention to detail Eagerness to learn and ability to adapt to change; commitment to one’s own professional growth Ability to work productively, demonstrate initiative when unsupervised, and maintain confidentiality Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the USN community The School University School of Nashville is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school with enrollment of 1,080 students kindergarten through twelfth grade.
