Description

Posting Details
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
NM Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) works to protect the people of New Mexico and the nation through a comprehensive and coordinated program of mitigating hazards, preparing for emergencies, preventing attacks, and recovering from disasters regardless of cause. Our department prepares for a wide variety of emergencies, including wildfires, flooding, health crises, and domestic attacks. When necessary, the state assists localities whose capabilities are overwhelmed, and DSHEM serves as the conduit for federal assistance. Our work in emergency management is coordinated around the five mission areas of the National Preparedness Goal: prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery.
The Mitigation Bureau administers the State’s Hazard Mitigation Program and serves as the program administrator and fiscal agent for all Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants for sub-applicants throughout New Mexico. It is the job of the Mitigation Bureau to conduct outreach, education, and to provide technical assistance throughout New Mexico for mitigation activities and funding sources for projects to lessen the impacts associated with natural hazards and non-human caused disaster events that prevent the loss of life and impacts to critical infrastructure.
Why does the job exist?
Conduct outreach activities to local entities with roles or interest in hazard mitigation associated with natural hazards and non- human caused disaster events. Position will assist with coordination of the state’s natural-hazard mitigation program; earthquake program; and floodplain management program. Position requires intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS-Office suite and the ability to create and manage spreadsheets, databases, and forms. Knowledge, skills, and ability in the fields of grant and sub grant management; environmental science, engineering, hydrology, or construction are preferred. Position will facilitate affected jurisdictions in identifying and developing technical federal applications for Hazard Mitigation Plans, public outreach and education on natural hazards, and structural mitigation projects - such as flood proofing structures, earthquake building retrofits and elevation offload prone structures, soil stabilization, storm water management, and structural flood control projects.
