Description

Position Summary Lion Energy is seeking a Model Based Controls Engineer to support development of advanced control systems for next-generation energy storage and portable power solutions. This role focuses on independently developing control models, algorithms, and simulation environments while contributing to system-level product development. Engineers in this role demonstrate strong technical proficiency, collaborate across disciplines, and help ensure high-performance and reliable control system implementations. Responsibilities & Duties * Independently design, develop, and implement control systems for energy storage and power conversion products * Develop and maintain plant models for energy storage systems using MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape * Design and simulate control algorithms supporting: * DC-DC and DC-AC conversion * Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) * Battery charge management and protection * Energy management and system-level power coordination * Perform simulation and validation of control algorithms using plant models and system simulations * Generate production-ready control algorithm source code using model-based design workflows * Collaborate with embedded software engineers to integrate generated code into hardware platforms and BSP layers * Participate actively in system architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews * Understand system-level interactions, integration constraints, and performance trade-offs * Identify, debug, and resolve moderately complex modeling and control system issues * Partner with validation teams to define test procedures and verification strategies * Document models, algorithms, and technical decisions supporting development and validation efforts Required Education & Experience * Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field * Typically 2–5 years of controls engineering or model-based design experience * Strong proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape * Experience designing and validating control algorithms using simulation and model-based development workflows * Working knowledge of embedded system integration principles * Familiarity with LabVIEW or other test automation tools preferred * Understanding of energy storage and power electronics systems is a plus, including: * MPPT * DC-DC converters * Inverters * Battery management and energy management systems * Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and SysML is a plus * Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills * Experience developing validation procedures and test plans preferred Impact & Growth Expectations * Deliver control models and algorithm features with minimal supervision * Demonstrate growing system-level understanding of energy storage and power conversion * Improve control system performance, reliability, and maintainability * Expand subsystem ownership and technical influence over time Compensation & Benefits Lion Energy offers a competitive total rewards package designed to support employee wellbeing and long-term success, including: * Competitive salary and performance incentives * Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance options * Retirement savings program with company matching * Paid time off and company holidays * Professional development and career growth opportunities About Lion Energy Lion Energy develops safe, renewable lithium energy storage solutions designed to help individuals, families, and organizations achieve energy independence.
