Reports To: Tooling Manager
The Mold / Tool and Die Maker II is responsible for performing mold repair and fabrication work ranging from mold preventative maintenance up to the fabrication of new injection molds as laid out in part prints and CAD mold designs. This role involves manufacturing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying injection molding tools and fixtures, as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient production while upholding ISO 9001-2015 quality standards. The Mold Maker II position operates under the guidance and oversight of the Tooling Manager, with limited supervision.
As a core member of the Toolroom, this position is required to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of Toolroom machines and equipment, provide feedback on stocking levels for materials and consumables, and aid in the training and skill development of Tooling Apprentices.
· Lead apprentices and new team members through the support of departmental initiatives, scheduled training, and individual mentorship as directed by the Tooling Manager.
· Collaborate with internal teams and external customers to fabricate precision tools and fixtures to meet customer / project requirements.
· Contribute to team efforts and work closely with managers, engineers, and internal cross-functional teams to support, evaluate, and improve products and processes.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Machine or fabricate molds, fixtures, EDM electrodes, and molding components to defined specifications
- Through collaboration with Engineers and the Tooling Manager, define scope of work for tool modifications, repairs and preventative maintenance
- As a contributor, participate in the creation of Manufacturability Reports and the execution of mold design reviews and approvals
- CAD/CAM activities - including CNC programming - in support of mold fabrication, EDM, and tool repair
- Estimate labor and material costs for tooling projects; record resource allocations required to complete tasks
- Operate forklift and pallet jacks to move molds and products within the facility.
- Communicate anticipated delays to the Tooling Manager and/or Project Manager
- Perform basic repairs and preventative maintenance on toolroom machines and equipment
- Support continuous improvement in tool-making processes
- Understand and use revision control
- Maintain and update records on all open work orders
- Comply with all safety protocols and complete required scheduled safety training.
- Report equipment repair and/or safety issues immediately to the Tooling Manager or Shift Lead.
Requirements:
- Journeyman Tool & Die Maker Certificate (or equivalent experience)
- Operational knowledge of toolroom fabrication equipment including CNC Milling machines, surface grinders, sinker & wire EDMs, and lathes
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to discover root causes and identify tooling solutions for injection molding challenges
- High level of attention to detail and precision tolerances
- Advanced knowledge of plastic injection molding tool design, construction, and fabrication methodology
- Strong English language verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present confidently and professionally to internal and external customers
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities on multiple projects, each with defined priorities
- Understanding of ergonomics and applicable industry standards
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move, with help, up to 100 pounds.
- Body Positions: The employee is regularly required to stand for two thirds or more of the shift and may also be required to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while completing other duties and responsibilities.
- Body Movement: The employee must have a full range of body movements including the use of his/her hands and fingers to handle, feel and operate objects such as machines and computer equipment. The ability to bend the body, to reach for objects, and to crouch when needed is also required.
- Sensory Requirements: The employee must have command of the following senses: sight, hearing, and touch. Specific visual abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to shift focus from computer screens to computer console and back and must be able to perform both visual and tactile inspections of mold components to ensure they conform to drawing specifications.
