Description The Assistant Director plays a dual role in delivering high-quality Montessori classroom programming while supporting the daily operations of the school. This position ensures a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment, leads and mentors classroom staff, partners closely with families, and assists the Director with staffing, compliance, scheduling, and administrative functions. This role is a key leadership presence within the school. What You’ll Do: Classroom Leadership & Child Development Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of children at all times in classrooms, playgrounds, and common areas Plan and implement Montessori-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum addressing physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth Prepare and maintain a clean, organized, and engaging classroom environment that meets MN DHS requirements Complete lesson plans, child observations, portfolios, conference documentation, and developmental records Guide children’s behavior using positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate practices Support children’s independence in toileting, dressing, feeding, and problem-solving Prepare children for transitions, including potty training and readiness for preschool classrooms Family & Community Engagement Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with parents Communicate regularly through meetings, newsletters, and school events Conduct tours and support enrollment efforts Partner with the community to promote the school’s mission and programs Staff Leadership & Mentorship Supervise, train, and mentor assistant teachers, aides, and substitute teachers Model professionalism, calm leadership, and positive communication at all times Develop and maintain classroom schedules with fair and equitable distribution of responsibilities Support classroom teams in maintaining peaceful, productive learning environments Collaborate with other teachers on classroom transitions, activities, and special events What You’ll Need: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Business Administration, or related field preferred, not required. Leadership experience or demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor staff. Proven skills in staff supervision, conflict resolution, and parent communication. Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months of hire). Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, which may include; Standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Lifting and carrying young children and classroom materials – up to 65 lbs. Bending, stooping, and kneeling to interact with children at their level. Ability to respond quickly to emergencies or situations requiring physical intervention. Familiarity with Montessori philosophy strongly preferred; openness to learn required. This range is subject to adjustment for other geographic work locations. In addition to geographic location, Sonnet Montessori considers education, experience, internal equity, market demands, and other qualifying criteria to determine starting salaries.
