SUMMARY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Work requires a bachelor’s degree (degree in English or political science preferred), with one to three years of office or legislative experience, and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of the legislative process, Senate procedures, organization, and congressional documents/terminology.
Knowledge of American history and current events.
Knowledge of the Senate as an institution.
Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, spelling, and vocabulary.
Knowledge of Senate rules and protocol regarding order and decorum in and around the Senate Chamber.
Ability to listen and write for continuity, sense, and detail.
Ability to deal with others using tact and diplomacy.
Ability to quickly and accurately identify Senators by sight and voice.
Ability to retain and recall information.
Ability to work extended and unscheduled hours as dictated by the Senate schedule.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to travel and work inside or outside of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, in the event of an emergency that requires relocation of the Senate.

Work includes gathering all W matter materials (consisting of executive and legislative messages, bills, resolutions, reports, amendments, notices, etc.) printed in the Morning Business section of the Congressional Record (Record), compiling other materials for inclusion in the Record, and recording daily floor activity as a reference for Official Reporters. Work is bound by Senate rules and regulations; the Senate Ethics Manual; the U.S. Senate Handbook; and Secretary of the Senate policies and procedures, but requires independent judgment in setting priorities and handling assignments.
