JOB SUMMARY:

The residential loan specialist will initiate the mortgage process for potential customers by preparing, analyzing, and verifying mortgage loan applications for the purchase or refinance of real estate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND LICENSES:

Experience: One year to three years of prior experience in lending or a related field preferred. Proficiency with Encompass LOS preferred.
Education: A high school degree or GED required.
Licenses: State Mortgage Licensing/NMLS required. Incumbents are required to maintain their registration active, and current, with the National Mortgage Licensing System throughout their employment.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Other Skills: • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • The ability to analyze and comprehend complex financial data and provide sound financial advice. • A thorough understanding of guidelines. • National Mortgage (Fannie Mae), and other types of construction and conventional loans. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Responsibilities

ROLE:

The residential loan specialist will be responsible for originating high quality residential first and second lien mortgage loans that meet the credit union’s credit, compliance, workflow and other rules and guidelines. Develop and maintain long-term relationships with branch operations, realtors, builders, attorneys, financial advisors, and other external sources. Counsel customers on various types of mortgage financing, choosing a program best suited to their needs. Complete mortgage application, follow through to closing and resolve any problems.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interviews with potential and current customers to understand their lending needs including first-time mortgages or refinance of existing loans. Completes mortgage applications with accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Assists customers with completion of mortgage applications, inspecting completed documents for accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Reviews loan applications, gathers credit histories and reports, and assesses applicants’ capacity to repay and default risk.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends and developments in the local real estate market; current and predicted lending rates; and changes in rules, regulations, and best practices of various mortgages.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use independent judgement and critical thinking skills in matters of significant impact.
  • Work with the mortgage processing staff and borrowers to ensure the loans are completed in a timely manner. Report daily, to management on current production and goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control, in addition to all company policies.
