Description

This role is within the Mortgages CIO function under CT (Customer Technology), part of the wider COO organisation, which is responsible for delivering IT solutions which have our customers and colleagues at heart.
You will be accountable for end-to-end delivery of the agreed roadmap that supports our Integration and Migration Strategy. You will work closely with Principal engineers and Technology Leads to provide leadership and support to our Engineering teams.
As a Lead Engineer you will ensure our systems and platforms are designed, developed and tested in a resilient and secure manner, aligned to strategy, ensuring we’re applying good engineering practices and principals. Mortgages are primarily provided via brokers, through our online and API channel. We are actively expanding our propositions in both the Home and Landlord space as part of integration.
This role will drive a culture of continuous improvement, with a focus on building technical capability (including people) across all disciplines. Across CT, we have an important journey ahead of us to build and maintain our position in the market and respond to changing customer needs, guided by the strategic pillars of More Rewarding Relationship, Simply Brilliant Service and Focused, Fit and Fast.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London office. Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Contribute to the design and execution of the data migration and integration strategy within the Mortgages area, supporting the broader integration programme objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, business analysts, and architects to translate functional and non-functional requirements into technical data solutions.
  • Design, build and maintain robust, scalable and high-performance ETL/ ELT pipelines using modern data engineering tools and practices, ensuring quality, lineage and auditability.
  • Support data discovery activities and analysis to inform data mapping, profiling, and migration planning, especially in the context of mergers or acquisitions.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical design documents and data flow diagrams aligned with architectural principles and data governance standards.
  • Assist in the implementation and enforcement of best practices in data engineering, including coding standards, testing strategies, and automation.
  • Partner with cloud and infrastructure teams to build and optimise data pipelines across hybrid environments (on-perm and cloud platforms).
  • Participate in technical reviews and sprint planning, contributing to continuous improvement in delivery and engineering practices.
  • Provide hands-on development and troubleshooting expertise throughout the project lifecycle, resolving data issues and ensuring completeness and accuracy of migration efforts.
  • Ensure alignment of delivery artefacts with the enterprise data strategy and technical roadmap set by data leadership, maintaining consistency across initiatives.
  • Proactively identify risks, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies in integration processes, and drive continuous improvement through targeted technical enhancements and mentoring of junior engineers.

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
