The Vertical Lift Material & Process Technology organization is seeking an associate or experienced Metallurgical Lab Engineer to join the Metals Lab team in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. This position will support the CH-47 and V-22 production programs and work closely with more experienced lab engineers and technicians in the execution of lab projects.
The engineer will perform tasks associated with metallurgical laboratory evaluations and failure analysis of V22 and CH-47 Chinook helicopter system components.
This role uses laboratory equipment to support analyses, e.g. binocular microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, digital photography, hardness testers, non-destructive inspection equipment, metallographic sample prep, X-ray diffractometer, etc.
The successful candidate should possess working knowledge of typical metallurgical analysis laboratory equipment, and be able to enthusiastically learn analysis skills and procedures. Must be comfortable working in various environments including hands-on laboratory and professional office settings. Must possess good interpersonal, communication and multi-tasking skills, familiarity with MS Word and Excel, and have strong technical writing background. Must be able to apply basic engineering and scientific principles to determine solutions to technical problems in support of a project leader.

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associate (Level 2)
Bachelor’s degree and typically 2 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a Master’s degree.
Experienced (Level 3)
Bachelor’s degree and typically 5 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a Master’s degree with typically 3 or more years’ experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification.

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Required

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 1+ years metal laboratory coursework or experienc

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills & Experience):

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited course of study in Materials Science

Responsibilities
  • Document analysis results in well-structured technical reports
  • Interface with engineers, management, and technical staff
  • Works with other organizations (e.g. Design, Stress and Test), and operates within a large company setting
  • Apply knowledge of metallic materials including physical and mechanical properties, analysis of component fractures, wear, corrosion, and chemistry, as well as microstructure and dimensional evaluations
  • Conducts routine failure analysis, using applicable analysis tools, established failure analysis techniques, engineering and scientific principles
  • Provides results for review by Materials Engineers
  • Assists the Lab team leader in the performance of qualification and verification evaluation of metallic materials and processes
  • Executes testing in accordance with approved test plans, procedures and schedules and provides data to team leadership for review and incorporation into qualification documents
  • Assists in the evaluation of metallic materials, processes and systems in support of Boeing products
  • Utilizes established test methods, tools, equipment, prototypes, materials, and product technology
  • Gathers data and information in support of metallic materials, process technology research and development programs, guided by more experienced engineers
  • The selected candidate must be able to work flexible hours, overtime and occasional weekends when necessary to support factory and operations activities
