SUMMARY

The Master Patient Index (MPI) Data Integrity Analyst maintains the accuracy, reliability and integrity of the Master Patient database to ensure patient safety for all clinical and financial systems dependent on this data. The analyst is responsible for maintaining patient identity integrity by using analytical and investigational skills. In addition, the analyst utilizes multiple tools and systems to coordinate the patient identity story and independently determine and execute action needed to remediate identity discrepancies. Completes root cause analysis of data discrepancies and works with other departments to determine the appropriate steps in resolving the problem. Performs in depth reviews of daily patient match reports to preserve the integrity of protected patient information and the accuracy of our legal medical record. Assists with researching and correction of accounts. Collaborates with application analysts to assist in the configuration, validation, testing, implementation and support of MPI software upgrades. Supports as needed with the identification, development and validation of training curriculum as it pertains to ongoing MPI cleanup activities.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; preference will be given to those with a bachelor’s in Health Information Management, Allied Health or Information Systems Technology. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree an Associate’s degree with five years relevant experience will be accepted.
  • A minimum three year’s relevant experience is required.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or equivalent Information Systems certification is desirable.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Cerner PowerChart, HBOC Star, Sunquest, Allscripts, ambulatory electronic medical records (EMRs), such as NextGen and e-Clinical Works, and dictation/transcription applications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Revenue Cycle and the functions of its distinct departments is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow the flow of data between multiple systems and identify errors, analyze root cause, and coordinate correction of data in affected systems is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical documentation and the types of visits that would contain such documentation is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements, CMS regulations, HIPAA regulations, Medical Staff Rules and Regulations and department procedures when reviewing a medical record to identify deficiencies that could jeopardize hospital certification, legal and/or financial status is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and multitask is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to be flexible, versatile, adaptable and facilitate work within a complex, multi-site environment is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a range of health care professionals is required.
    Must participate in a rotational on-call schedule with other MPI team members to provide 24/7/365 coverage for Munson Healthcare (MHC) and associated physician practices.

  • Maintain the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of the Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) to ensure patient safety for all clinical systems dependent on this data.
  • Work to ensure patient data is accurate and updated by reviewing standard department reports on a daily basis.
  • Use exceptional problem solving and investigational skills to identify patient identity discrepancies. Determine, coordinate, and execute appropriate steps to accurately remediate the discrepancies including, but not limited to, transpositions in name, date of birth, gender, and social security number, as well as duplicates, overlaps, overlays, patient aliases and personnel combines.
  • Safeguard proper billing outcomes when duplicate patient accounts cannot be merged due to system limitations. Remediation includes directing new accounts to be created, transferring charges and moving results.
  • Ensure compliance with established MHC policies and procedures related to patient identifier formatting in order to decrease the creation of duplicate medical records across the enterprise.
  • Merge patient medical records in multiple hospital systems accurately and timely.
  • Ensure accurate and judicious movement and uncoupling of electronic health information on multiple patients maintained in the various clinical applications.
  • Update the MPI with confirmed patient information changes received from external sources (e.g. name change verified by the County Clerk, or date of death confirmed by another healthcare system).
  • Verify MPI accuracy after a system downtime and perform remediation to re-sync data between systems or to combine patients in various systems.
  • Analyze and identify root cause of data discrepancies and bring to attention of senior team members and work together to determine the next step in resolving the problem and/or issues.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of all entity-level information systems (i.e., registration systems, master patient indexes, emergency registration practices, clinical results, electronic health records, etc.) by attending meetings and/or educational sessions as requested.
  • Provide quality customer service and serve as an exemplary representative of the Coding and Data Integrity department.
  • Provide ongoing and timely communication, feedback, and follow-through with customers and peers.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
