GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the Sipekne’katik Director of Family Well Being Program, the Msit Mijua’ji’jk Home Visitor is responsible for delivering programming to families in a culturally sensitive manner, to promote and facilitate healthy pregnancies and enhance parenting capacity and early learning opportunities for infants and toddlers. Practice will be adapted to meet family needs while maintaining recommended practices.
The Msit Mijua’ji’jk program builds upon community strengths and cultural context to enhance parenting and early learning opportunities which is known to result in better child health, well-being and learning outcomes for children at school entry and life. Recognizing parents/caregivers as the first and best teachers of their young ones, the Msit Mijua’ji’jk program empowers parents and caregivers, offering tools and support to uplift families.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

· Education: Post-secondary diploma in Early Childhood Development, Education or a related field (preferred).
· Experience: Work with infants, toddlers, and families, in particularly in First Nations communities.
· Knowledge: Strong understanding of maternal/ infant health, parenting education, early childhood development.
· Skills:
- Program planning and facilitation for families and young children.
- Ability to manage caseloads, conduct home visits, and work independently.
- Strong communication, diplomacy, and problem-solving abilities.
- Collaborative team member with sound judgement and discretion
· Cultural Competence: Knowledge of Mi’kmaw and other First Nations cultural, social, and educational struggles; cross-cultural sensitivity required. Experience working in a First Nations community; and ability to speak a First nation language are preferred.
· Requirements:
- Must pass criminal, vulnerable sector, and child abuse checks
- Must be in good standing with child welfare services for 5+ years.
