The Opportunity: The Truro News and New Glasgow News are seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in Pictou County and Colchester County. Our ideal candidate is skilled at web reporting, proficient at writing articles quickly and efficiently and can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what’s happening for our online readers. Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments as well as generating ideas for content to attract and keep readers returning to our website daily. A strong understanding of SEO and best practices for web is considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Wordpress, but support and training will be provided. We’re looking for someone who is interested in diving deeper into issues that impact the lives of communities throughout Pictou County and Colchester County. Familiarity with current events is helpful. Our candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues to do investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently, as this is a work-from-home role. However, the candidate must be able to provide in-person coverage of events throughout the coverage area. The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical to the position, as is working closely with the managing editor and assistant news editor. The position is a non-unionized job, working with a remote newsroom.
What you’ll do: · Reporting and writing stories for our website, as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of our platforms. · Skilled with using social media to find sources, story ideas and topics of interest to the community each day and respond to explain why these talking pieces are important to residents in Pictou County and Colchester County. · Respond quickly to stories that are important to our readers, turning around pieces that will help grow readership online by providing context, analysis and explanations. · Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects. · Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories. · Working with digital teams to create other multimedia elements.
Who you are: · Experience at a news organization in a deadline-oriented reporting/writing role. · Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism and social media. · Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions. · Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team.
The details: This is a non-unionized position at 37.5 hours per week, with weekend and evening work required.
