Current opening is in the Parks & Recreation Department. Performs a variety of general administrative and technical duties managing and coordinating day-to-day processes related to educational functions of the National Frontier Trails Museum. Oversees NFTM building, equipment, grounds and coordinates maintenance and repair. Develops curriculum-based programs for schools. Develops curriculum-based programs for schools. Develops and implements interpretive training. Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with City policies, procedures and applicable laws including interviewing, hiring, and training, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding, and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving issues for part-time Center Attendants. Create schedule for and train Center Attendants, responds to requests and assists with scheduling group tours. Creates, schedules, implements, promotes, and evaluates a comprehensive year-round series of educational and public programs and events for NFTM based on needs and interests of residents, tourists, and City and department priorities. Develops and implements specialized education programs for kindergarten through college-level students including tours of exhibits, “hands-on” activities, and site exploration. Builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with school districts, museums, civic groups, and trails organizations to evaluate community needs and trends; incorporates solutions to those needs in the museum’s educational goals and objectives. Coordinates and directs the museum volunteer educator program: recruiting and interviewing, selecting, training, mentoring, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating volunteers. Selects, orders, prices, stocks, and displays merchandise in the gift shop, assists in maintaining sales files and current inventory records and performs periodic physical inventories of merchandise. Reconciles, prepares, and deposits all receipts for the Museum and maintains deposit records. Tracks, allocates and prepares payment records for other entities that sell merchandise in the museum store. Maintain and update NFTM online calendar, internal program calendars and contributes to website content. Maintains and updates online retail store, including processing, packing, and shipping orders as needed. Staffs front desk when necessary. Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends as facility schedule requires.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university in Education, History, Museum Management, or related field, two years progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess valid driver’s license. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Working knowledge of Nineteenth (19th) Century American History; best practices in educational instruction methods; national and state education standards for instruction; proper English usage; basic budgetary principles and practices, recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques; administration of staff, and computer applications as related to work. Requires skill in planning, directing, reviewing & evaluating work of staff. Requires ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Physical Demands: Position requires hand dexterity and ability to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk, hear, climb stairs, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Typical Working Conditions: Working conditions are typically quiet and exposed to occasional large group noise.
