POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the general direction of the Manager Health Services, Child Life Department, the Music Therapist is responsible for providing a music therapy program as a therapeutic tool for patients, to restore, maintain and improve mental, physical and emotional health; responding to psychosocial needs of the patients and their families; prioritizing patient caseloads; managing the daily organizational components of the Music Therapy Program; and supervising music therapy students and interns. The Music Therapist acts in a professional manner adhering to the principles of Family Centred Care.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working with children as a Music Therapist in a healthcare setting preferred.

EDUCATION (DEGREE/DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE)

  • Bachelor of Music Therapy required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Must demonstrate understanding in the areas of: growth and development, play and family dynamics, and interventions to support coping.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, observation and assessment skills required.
  • Must have a basic understanding of children’s illnesses and the effects of hospitalization on children and their families.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent or strong guitar and vocal skills required.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical demands include carrying necessary musical instruments and equipment.
  • Other physical demands may include crouching, stretching, kneeling, lifting and holding children, raising and lowering crib and bed rails, and pushing and pulling wheelchairs and beds.
  • Must be able to work with children from infants to teens.
    This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective agreement.
