Description
Job Summary  The Manager, ETO Engineering (Engineered-to-Order) – Medium-Voltage Switchgear leads the execution of customer-specific medium voltage switchgear solutions for mission-critical, industrial, and data center customers. This role owns the technical application and engineering execution from sales handoff through engineering release, ensuring solutions are safe, compliant, executable, and aligned with Vertiv’s standardized product platforms and business objectives.  The Manager leads global ETO engineering teams, serves as the primary technical interface for customers and internal stakeholders, and ensures clear ownership between ETO Engineering and New Product Development (NPD).    Key Responsibilities  ETO Execution  * Own customer requirements definition, application engineering, and engineered-to-order configuration for MV switchgear projects.  * Translate customer, utility, and site-specific requirements into compliant, executable designs using approved product platforms.  * Define scope, assumptions, risks, and any deviations from standard products, ensuring proper technical and commercial approval.  * Support complex bids, technical clarifications, and customer design reviews as the senior applications authority.  Engineering Leadership  * Lead and develop ETO Engineering teams, providing technical direction, workload prioritization, coaching, and performance feedback.  * Ensure consistent application of engineering standards, design rules, and approved architectures.  * Act as the primary escalation point for application-related technical issues impacting cost, schedule, or customer satisfaction.  Alignment with R&D (NPDI)  * Partner closely with R&D (NPDI) team to ensure engineered-to-order solutions align with current product architectures, standards, and roadmaps.  * Provide structured feedback to R&D on recurring customer requirements, design gaps, and field learnings to inform future platform development.  * Support implementation of new or updated standard products into the applications workflow once released by NPDI.  * Avoid creation of non-standard solutions that bypass product governance without formal approval.  Cross-Functional Collaboration  * Collaborate with Sales, Product & Project Management, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Field Services to ensure seamless order execution.  * Ensure smooth handoff from ETO Engineering to detailed design and manufacturing execution.  * Communicate technical risks, schedule impacts, and mitigation plans clearly to leadership and stakeholders.  Technical Oversight, Safety & Compliance  * Provide technical oversight for medium-voltage switchgear applications, including protection schemes, control systems, interlocking, and auxiliary systems.  * Ensure compliance with applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, and UL standards (e.g., ANSI C37, IEEE, IEC 62271) and utility-specific requirements.  * Review and approve key application deliverables, including one-line diagrams, layouts, control philosophies, calculations, and bills of material.  * Maintain strong focus on safety, including arc-flash mitigation and safe design practices.  Performance & Continuous Improvement  * Drive improvements in application cycle time, engineering accuracy, standardization, and reuse.  * Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for application errors, test issues, or field feedback.  * Track and improve KPIs related to quote-to-release cycle time, quality, and customer satisfaction.  * Foster a culture of customer focus, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement, aligned with Vertiv leadership behaviors.    Required Qualifications  * Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Electrical Engineering.  * 7+ years leading engineering teams and managing multiple concurrent customer programs.  * 5+ years of experience in medium-voltage switchgear, applications engineering, or customer-specific power distribution solutions.  * Strong technical knowledge of MV switchgear systems, including protection and control.  * Working knowledge of ANSI / IEEE / IEC standards and utility interconnection requirements.  * Strong communication, customer-facing, and problem-solving skills.    Travel Requirement  * Approximately 25% travel, including customer meetings and manufacturing site engagement.
Responsibilities
The Manager leads global ETO engineering teams to execute customer-specific medium-voltage switchgear solutions from sales handoff through engineering release. They are responsible for ensuring technical compliance, managing project scope, and fostering cross-functional collaboration across the organization.
