Description

The North America Environmental Health and Safety Manager builds strong partnerships across Soufflet Malt to lead transformational change in health, safety, and environmental performance. The NA EHS Manager ensures the successful execution of the EHS Plan, policies, and procedures throughout North America Processing operations, fostering a proactive culture of safety, legal compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement that transforms how we work and thrive together.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field required; graduate degree preferred.
  • Strong and proven background in ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 (OHSAS 18001) implementation and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental auditing and driving positive, measurable improvements in workplace safety and sustainability.
  • Proven experience in developing, securing, and managing environmental permits/approvals, including required agency reporting.
  • Proven ability to build strong, trusting relationships with local, state/provincial, and federal regulators, as well as community partners and industry stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skill in partnering with remote site management teams, senior leaders, and cross-functional teams to drive collaborative solutions.
  • Expertise in working alongside Operations and Engineering to identify, develop, and implement sustainable projects that support Soufflet Malt’s emissions and resource reduction goals.
  • Successful track record of engaging effectively with Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and motivate site leadership, frontline teams, and contractors to embrace EHS practices and values.
  • High degree of computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft 365 and process mapping tools.
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills for risk, hazard, and incident management, including experience with TapRoot or equivalent root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory requirements and translate them into practical procedures and clear guidance for operational teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation, persuasion, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Self-driven, with a strong work ethic and willingness to take on tasks at all levels to support team success.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to sites within North America and internationally (including Canada and Australia); must hold a valid North America driver’s license, passport, and ability to rent vehicles for business travel.
  • Capability to deliver in-house training, coaching, and presentations to support EHS learning and development.
    Desirable: Certificate in Applied HACCP Principles; engineering knowledge; comprehensive understanding of the malting or food processing industry and equipment; proficiency in French.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of EHS Coordinators and Environmental Specialists across North America Processing, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Champion Soufflet Malt’s Safety for Life vision by ensuring full compliance with all environmental, health, and safety legal requirements, permits, and industry standards.
  • Ensure all sites align with the Soufflet Malt Management System Framework for safety, health, and environment, partnering closely with Quality and Food Safety teams to enhance risk management, maintain certifications, and drive sustainable improvements.
  • Provide expert guidance, coaching, and reporting to leaders at all levels, empowering them to integrate EHS principles into daily operations and decision-making.
  • Lead investigations of all significant incidents, ensuring root cause analysis, corrective actions, and compliance with company procedures.
  • Oversee Worker Compensation claim processes for US and Canadian Processing, providing expertise and support to ensure effective case management and resolution.
  • Collaborate with the global EHS team and North American stakeholders to design and implement transformational initiatives that advance the EHS strategy and deliver measurable results.
  • Support and/or lead the development of targeted EHS programs that align with business objectives and drive operational excellence.
  • Partner with North America leadership to build understanding of EHS goals and targets, positioning EHS as a strategic enabler of operational success.
  • Provide EHS expertise and solutions to support the successful delivery of North America Capital Expenditure projects.
  • Ensure regular site-level EHS meetings and worker consultation processes are in place and effective, reinforcing a culture of open communication and shared responsibility.
  • Develop and maintain an internal audit framework that verifies compliance with US and Canadian regulatory requirements, while driving continuous improvement.
  • Implement routine internal audit and inspection plans in alignment with the Global Soufflet Malt process, monitoring EHS performance and closing actions in a timely manner.
  • Build strong relationships with local, state/provincial, and federal regulators, community partners, and internal stakeholders to promote a proactive and collaborative EHS culture.
