The Museum of the American Indian (MAI), located in Novato, CA on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Miwok people, seeks an experienced Indigenous Creative Producer / Field Producer for a unique consulting opportunity. This contract position will focus on field-based filming, portrait photography, oral history sound recording, and creative production support for a five-month, grant-funded multimedia storytelling initiative that highlights lived Native experiences, language of the land, and the cultural vitality of Native peoples in Marin County and surrounding Northern Bay California.

Duration: August 19, 2025 through January 31, 2026
Compensation: $21,500 total (see compensation itemization below)
Location: Marin County, California (Miwok Park) and Remote

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated expertise across multiple areas of filmmaking: producing, filming, and post-production.
  • Knowledge and experience in photography, including portraiture.
  • Prior experience in community-based or culturally sensitive film projects, especially with Indigenous communities.
  • Strong existing relationships within the California Native film industry and community.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, particularly with Tribal governments, Elders, elected officials, nonprofit institutions, and diverse stakeholders.
  • Cultural humility and a commitment to Indigenous self-representation in all storytelling processes.

Responsibilities
  • Co-lead the project with the Filmmaker/Director, under the guidance of the Museum’s Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Co-produce and film archival documentation, including B-roll footage, of cultural demonstrations/celebrations during Aay-Ko Nature-Based Playgroup sessions, Trade Feast, FARE Workshops, and other Native programming within Marin County.
  • Scout on location sites for filming and assist in developing shooting schedules, call sheets, and on-set coordination (sound and/or lighting assistance).
  • Capture and record oral history interviews with Indigenous Elders and Native Community members. (Trade Feast 2025 is October 12, 2025; plus other dates TBD).
  • Photograph portraiture sessions of Native Community members to be exhibited in the Museum of the American Indian.
  • Serve on a newly formed Indigenous Advisory Panel, providing insight, cultural accuracy and sensitivity, and community feedback throughout the project.
  • Collaborate closely with the Filmmaker/Director, and with the composer/musician/scorer, during post-production to edit and present a polished, meaningful documentary for public screening in late January 2026.
  • Ensure all activities are aligned with the Museum’s mission of self-representation, cultural continuity, and community-centered storytelling.
