In order to support the European Sustainment Engineering Team, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

NATO AWACS – MECHANICAL SYSTEM ENGINEER (D/F/M)

We at Airbus Defence and Space are a global leader in military aviation. As part of our collaboration with NATO, we are seeking a highly motivated engineer to join our international team within the Customer Support Organization in Manching. The team is located close to the maintenance shop floor and focuses on the sustainment, reliability, and engineering support of the NATO E-3A aircraft.
Our mission: Ensuring a safe and reliable NATO AWACS fleet by providing exceptional support for operation and maintenance.

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A university degree in Aircraft Mechanical Engineering , Aeronautical Engineering , or a related discipline focused on Aircraft Heavy Maintenance or design.
  • Proven experience in the design and development of commercial or military aircraft systems
  • Several years of hands-on experience in engineering or MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) , preferably with large military surveillance or reconnaissance aircraft such as the E-3 Sentry (AWACS), E-8 JSTARS, Boeing P-8 Poseidon , or E-7 Wedgetail .
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical aircraft system architecture and system integration, including interfaces with avionics, structure, and mission systems.
  • Solid knowledge of certification and airworthiness approval processes for airborne systems under civil (e.g. EASA/FAA) and military regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in Requirements Management and Systems Engineering methodologies, including the use of tools such as DOORS or similar.
  • Familiarity with technical support activities for NAEW&C (NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control) Force Fleet is considered a strong advantage.
  • Possession of a valid Class B driver’s license.
  • Proficiency in English at negotiation level (spoken and written) is required

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for mechanical aircraft systems, including Hydraulics (ATA 29), Pneumatics (ATA 36), Onboard Oxygen Systems (ATA 35), Environmental Control & Cooling Systems (ATA 21), Braking Systems (ATA 32), Water and Waste Systems (ATA 38), and Fire Protection Systems (ATA 26).
  • Advance toward assuming responsibility as a Certification Verification Engineer (CVE) in accordance with EASA Part 21 Subpart J , focusing on selected ATA Chapters.
  • Perform detailed analysis of technical error reports and develop actionable, technically sound solution proposals to ensure continued airworthiness.
  • Draft and release Service Bulletins (SBs) and NATO-specific implementation documentation in alignment with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Review, validate, and refine system- and subsystem-level requirements in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring traceability and compliance with airworthiness standards.
  • Develop, document, and certify maintenance procedures, inspection protocols, and repair strategies, in accordance with applicable Maintenance Manuals (AMM/CMM/SRM) .
  • Prepare and evaluate system availability strategies and maintenance optimization concepts, leveraging tools such as MSG-3 , RCM (Reliability-Centered Maintenance) and FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis) .
  • Formulate and approve system modification or implementation concepts, coordinating across engineering, maintenance, and operational domains.
  • Manage obsolescence and diminishing manufacturing sources through DMSMS (Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages) and DMS (Data Management Systems) processes.
  • Contribute to Safety and Hazard Assessments (SHA/SSA) in alignment with military and civil aviation standards such as ARP4761 .
  • Provide technical training and ongoing support to both customers and internal engineering colleagues to ensure a consistent understanding of system operation, safety, and maintenance practices.
  • Occasional travel is required to support customer operations and international stakeholder coordination.
