Position Summary: The Naturalist is responsible for narrating entire whale watch trips which includes a safety talk, harbor tour, whale identification, and messaging that includes ecological, educational, and conservation topics. Duties and Responsibilities: Narration of whale watch trips, including a safety talk, harbor tour, whale identification, and messaging that includes ecological, educational, and conservation topics. Performing a sound check, mic battery check, and set up of video displays before whale watch begins. Supervision of Intern(s) while they perform daily tasks. Performing and coordinating educational outreach with intern(s) around the vessel before and after trip, using educational biofacts. Reporting whale harassment events and dead/entangled whales to the Coast Guard and other agencies in coordination with the whale watch captain. Coordinating whale positions, distance, and species with the whale watch captain over the radio. Being aware of Regional Whale Watch Guidelines, Seasonal changes, Dynamic Management Areas, Whale Alert Status, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Performing photo identification of marine mammals and coordinate collection of field data with interns, using organization data protocols. Answering customer questions and providing exceptional customer service. Uploading GPS data, photos, and photo sheets daily onto network. Cleaning and taking proper care of cameras and gear pre- and post-trips. Writing daily blog, including photos. Quality checking and keeping track of intern submitted data, enter photo data properties into iMatch. Uploading photos of calves, unknown whales, sightings list, and other various catalogs. Attend mandatory meetings and trainings. Additional job duties assigned. Requirements & Qualifications: At least one prior whale watch season of experience working as a naturalist or whale watch education/research intern. Region specific preferred. A Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Science, Biology, Environmental, Zoology, or Educational related field preferred. Photography and field data collections experience. Strong customer service, organization, and interpersonal skills. Maintain a high level of organization, detailed oriented and meet deadlines. Handle multiple tasks/projects at one time. Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by job responsibility. Listen effectively, assess the situation, determine relevant issues, & suggest solutions. Have a working knowledge of computer skills, including but not limited to proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites. Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to coworkers and guests.
